The education system in the Central African Republic is severely lacking. Approximately half the adult population is illiterate even though education is supposed to be free and compulsory between ages 6-14. Many children do not have access to schools due to a lack of infrastructure and resources. The educational budget is meager, resulting in shortages of teachers and increased numbers of street children. Enrollment rates were 56.9% in 1991 but only 43% in 2000. Ongoing violence has prevented many students from returning to school since 2013. Improving the education system is key to developing the country.
