Education is an interface
For years, we got stuck into an old path of learning.
An outdated model of education, founded for an old society.
Basically, education has been based in the process of teach a whole block of data to a lot of students,
ignoring completely the diversity of minds and the creative nature of the human being.
The whole process has been an one-sided path with a lot of losses through the way.
What people sometimes don't realize is that education is an interface. How?
Well, an interface is basically a tool to translate some language or code to another. You have your
computer interface, that translates the code to a visual system.
What about education?
Education translates an embodied ​corpus ​of knowledge to new, fresh minds, not used to that yet.
You get something already done - the information - and teaches it to someone who need to
understand that. Language, math, programming… everything need an education interface to be taught
to anyone.
In our times, we have seen how many new things appears every day. How much information we
create in a single in a single. Only in the last twenty years we have been created more stuff than in the
whole twenty century. And unfortunately, education has been failing in give to the new generation a
suitable grounding to this changing and competitive world: a world where exponential and disruptive
innovations forces us to change our paradigms every single day.
So this is why we created Monera. With a network-based and connected spine in our main view, we
wanna change the way that learning has taken place.
what is our main inspiration?
Life
Life is a real-time, incessant and creative process of thinking, choice and interaction. Our beings and
minds are interfaces to the real world, where we conceive a whole world of our own.
So we can say that the life algorithm is the source of what should be the learning algorithm.
A way of inspiration and creation. A journey that allows new minds to get in touch with their own
abilities,not just a theoretical overview.
To do that, we got together teachers, storytellers, psychologists and technology innovators, to bring a
new ecosystem of learning: a real community to turn data into knowledge, and knowledge into an
active process.
We assembled a four pillar based model:
story
projects
technology
innovation
So, our purpose is to bring the student, since the very first moment, to an organic pathway, where the
school is actually a journey.
First, each student has an avatar, which will be not a fake of the self, but a representation of the
values and the personal journey of the student into this global community.
The student will, so, engage with his real-life group, just like a RPG game , through a series of projects
-all created with gamification and storytelling approaches - of his own choice. Each project will
challenge the group, and will require a broad range of knowledge, in a multilayer interface with
different possibilities of interactions and necessities.
for example: a group may face a water crisis. To solve that, they will need knowledge of geography,
history, science.. even math and languages. The difference is that the gamification approach will
conceive an organically method of discovery. And all the mentors, the real life teachers, will present
themselves not as the old figure of the master, but rather as helpers and guides through the
challenges. We are not excluding the knowledge, we are turning it in a practical and intuitive system.
Each project and different approaches to it solving will be shared between groups, and all the
perspectives will be put into debate, ensuring the real learning and community based purpose. So,
beyond being just a funny way of learning, it will be a real life possible path. The focus is not judge the
work, but instead, build a open source community for the challenges of the present and the future.
The technology behind Monera is as innovative, multi platform and transmedia system, which
integrates a massive online system, where each student will interact with his real group and with all
community. In the system, each project will be a layered story, with V.R. content, for real immersion;
and an interface where the phases of the project will be building and a the the knowledge needed for
the problem solving will be connected, like real life experience. Beyond traditional school knowledge,
the students will also be in touch with scientists, companies and professionals of different areas, so we
assure the the problems will be faced with the most disruptive and up-to-date information.
