Final Plenary Session wrap up by Don Olcott for the DEHub/ODLAA Education 2011 to 2021- Global challenges and perspectives of blended and distance learning the (14 to 18 February 2011).
Session 1 -- global challenges in educationMadan Pant
The document discusses the attributes of an educated person in the 21st century. It analyzes views from various thought leaders on skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and lifelong learning. Additionally, it recognizes a strong consensus among sources that an educated person is equipped to handle most life situations through skills like reasoning, writing, speaking and making decisions. Formal education often overlooks these soft skills in favor of more easily assessable ones, but true education is an ongoing process not defined by degrees alone.

Abstract: In this panel three long-standing and highly successful distance education units — University of Illinois at Springfield, SUNY Learning Network, and Penn State World Campus — will be contrasted in terms for their structural and functional profiles, and the inherent opportunities and challenges these present for their respective institutions.
The document outlines 10 common challenges facing educators: 1) keeping up with students' digital lives outside of school, 2) selecting appropriate tech tools for the classroom, 3) providing differentiated reference materials, 4) helping students research and organize findings, 5) giving every student a voice, 6) managing cell phone use, 7) creating engaging projects for multiple learning styles, 8) improving communication with parents and students, 9) accessing meaningful professional development, and 10) determining where to start addressing these challenges. The overarching message is that the challenges allow educators to face how technology can be used, rather than being about technology itself.

1. Poverty is widespread in India, with roughly 260 million people living in poverty conditions.
2. Stories of Ram Saran and Lakha Singh illustrate the daily struggles of poverty, including low wages, lack of food and medical care, and children having to work.
3. Poverty is defined and measured in terms of low income and consumption levels, as well as lack of access to resources like clean water, sanitation, healthcare, education, and jobs. Social scientists also examine social exclusion and vulnerability to poverty.
An institutional voice to support teachers and learners in blended and dista...alanwylie
This document discusses several strategies for supporting higher education workforces in providing distance learning opportunities. It examines the importance of learner-learner interaction and how instructional design can influence interaction patterns. Small group sizes and required participation can foster a sense of community. Communities of practice and professional conversations are identified as ways to integrate casual academics and reduce their isolation. A whole-university approach is needed to develop ownership of graduate attributes across institutions.
Symposium: An institutional voice to support teachers and learners in blended...alanwylie
The document discusses learner-learner interaction in online learning contexts. It identifies different types of learning interactions that can occur, including learner-content, learner-teacher, and learner-learner interactions. It also discusses how the size of learning groups and required participation can impact learner-learner interaction. Specifically, smaller groups seem to allow for more personal communication between learners, help develop a sense of community, and foster conditions for dialogic learning and the development of learning relationships.

Open scholars are transparent by making their intellectual work digitally visible and inviting criticism and feedback. They create by maximizing social learning and connectivist pedagogies. They use and contribute open educational resources to save time. They openly apply their research, do open research by making lab notebooks public, filter and share information with others, support open learning alternatives, publish in open access journals which have increased citations, comment openly on others' works, assign open textbooks, induce open students who become co-creators and gain experience, teach open courses, build networks, and are agents of change who help cross-pollination and growth of learning networks.

This document discusses a longitudinal study of online role plays used in Australian higher education from 1990 to 2006. It found that 82% of role plays were reused with the same learning design rather than a different one. It also examines four case study online role plays in detail to analyze the various types and nuances of reuse by other teachers and universities. Based on these findings, the document considers whether learning designs should be purposefully created with this type of localized reuse in mind rather than assuming reuse will be by unknown teachers. It identifies factors that influence the reusability of learning objects and role plays.

The document discusses the increasing importance of knowledge and higher education globally and nationally. It notes pressures on governments and universities to expand access to higher education while containing costs. This has led to policies encouraging private provision, increased student contributions, performance measures, and use of ICT to reduce delivery costs. Students now expect flexible options and personal attention. For open and distance education providers, there are challenges around research status, competition from private providers, and attracting qualified teaching staff. The document calls for a strategic review of open and distance education to determine strengths and focus, and greater collaboration among institutions.
