5. The skeleton of an adult human consists of 206 bones. It is composed of 270
bones at birth, which decreases to 206 bones by adulthood after some bones
have fused together.
Functions of the skeleton:
- shape: When put together, the skeletal system provides the base framework to
which all the other tissues and organs attach, giving shape to the human body.
- support: The skeleton provides support to the body and keeps your internal
organs in their proper place.
- movement: Tendons attach your muscles to the bones of your skeleton. The
muscular and skeletal systems work together to carry out bodily movement,
- protection: The skeleton protects vital organs from damage, encasing them
within hard bones.
- blood cell production and storage: Skeletal bones also function as a storage
bank for minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus
