My name is Sandy Hawes.
I’ll be your research guide for this
series of tutorials:

3. Navigate to the Saint Leo University
library home page
• Navigate directly to the library home page
at http://slulibrary.saintleo.edu
• Logon to my.saintleo.edu and select Library
from the landing page
• Within your course’s online classroom,
choose Library from the Resources tab
• Bookmark the address

4. Begin with a “discovery” search
• Enter your search phrase in the big search box on
the library home page
• Use natural language but keep your phrase short
(two or three words that describe what you’re trying
to find)
• Click the “Go” button
• Scan the list of results for some books or eBooks
and click on their titles
• On the new screen, use the right-hand frame and
scroll down and click on Description to display
subject headings
• Jot down the best subject headings for later
database searches or click them to run new
searches immediately

5. “Discovery” search, cont.
• The discovery search engine can see
subject headings for articles, too
• Again, click on the title of an article (like
you did with a book/ebook)
• On the new screen, in the right-hand
frame, scroll down and click on Description
to show all subject headings associated
with the article
• Jot down any subject headings that seem
relevant to your search. You’ll need them
to target your subsequent searches in the
databases

6. More about subject headings
• Subject Headings are controlled
vocabulary terms used by the Library of
Congress to help us search precisely for
materials
• Click on one of the subject headings
shown for a book, ebook, or article in a
catalog search to quickly find everything in
the library cataloged with that subject
• Or use them in Advanced searches to
more precisely target your search with
multiple subjects at one time

7. We will ship print books to you
• This service is called Interlibrary Loan
• We ship to you free of charge, but you pay
to ship back to us
• Not all books are available in electronic
format
• If we have a print book on the shelf, it is
considered a key resource for your studies
• Use the Book Request form to place your
order (home page > Forms > Book
Request form)
• Allow adequate time for shipment

8. Interlibrary Loan for articles, too
• If you find a citation to a print article that
you need, we will try to locate and email a
copy to you
• Use the Forms > Article Request form
• Again, allow ample time to delivery
• The process often takes more than a week
• Always cross-check to see if we might
have the journal full-text in another
datebase by searching the catalog for the
title of the journal
