Continuity editing tells a story in chronological order through short shots that are pieced together, while montage editing uses longer shots that are not necessarily in order. Slow motion edits video slower than normal to slow down action. Ellipsis skips over parts of time through leaping edits captioned with time passed. Post-production visual effects manipulate or add imagery after filming. Shot/reverse shot alternates between two characters looking at each other, while match cuts link shots through graphic or action similarities. Jump cuts appear to jump forward in time through slightly differing camera positions.

3. Continuity editing
• An editing style that tells the action in
chronological order. Example:- Soaps.
• A style that puts pieces of action together, but
not in chronological order.
• It is an interrupted shot in a film which lasts
much longer than the conventional editing
pace, usually lasting for several minutes.
Montage editing
Long take
4. Short take
• Opposite of a long take, this is used in
montage and means having rapid edits from
shot to shot.
• Editing a film or playing back videos more
slowly than it was made/recorded, so that the
action appears slower than in real life.
Slow motion
5. Ellipsis
• When the cut doesn’t go to the next instant
point of the drama, but leaps forward in time;
this could be minutes, seconds, hours or even
years. The leap is often captioned.
• A style of editing in which you expand the
time of the video, making the duration of the
sequence longer than real-time.
Expansion of time
8. Shot/reverse shot
• Is a film technique where the camera flips
between 2 characters looking at each other, so
on one shot we see one character looking at
the other and then switches.
• Its a part of continuity editing, where in one
shot you see the character looking at
something and then in the next shot you see
what they’re looking at from their eye line.
Eye line match
9. Graphic match
• Its when there’s a cut to a shot of an object
that is similar to one in a previous shot in the
same place on the screen.
• Is a part of continuity editing, when the action
of the character is followed up by the next
logical action of that character.
Action match
10. Jump cut
• Is a cut in film editing, in which 2 consecutive
shots of the same subject are taken away from
camera positions that vary on slightly, giving
the effect of jumping forwards in time.
• Its the technique of alternating between 2 or
more scenes that often happen
simultaneously but in different locations.
Crosscutting/parallel editing
11. Cut away
• Its a shot that is usually of something other
than a different subject or a close-up of a
different part of the subject.
• A cut from a wide shot to a shot of detail. E.g.
A close up.
Insert (cut in)
13. Cut
• The movement from one shot to another.
• The gradual transition from one shot to
another.
• When the shot fades in from black to a full
image of the action, usually only taking a few
seconds.
Cross-dissolve
Fade in
14. Fade out
• When the shot fades out gradually to a black
screen, often used to switch to a new scene
and/or location.
• It’s an editing technique where one shot
appears on screen and moves across pushing
the other off.
