EDMODO AND MASTERY LEARNING
• Each student has individual account
• After core instruction and assessment, students who struggle are put into
small groups visible only to them
• The small group contains several resources for relearning the material:
Quizlet, YouTube tutorials, etc.; as well as another assessment
• Students use resources to relearn material individually using computer or
device
• Many students have more success on the assessment after relearning, and
you can focus your attention on the five percent who need 1-on-1
EDMODO FEATURES
• Save student work in a place that they can't lose it and doesn't clutter your desk
• Use the "Note" feature to send reminders to classes or small groups, to post
assignments, and to send study materials
• You receive notifications when students complete assignments, they receive
notifications from you when items are assigned or assessments are graded
• Create quizzes with everything from matching to open-ended questions, with lower-
level questions being computer graded to save your time for the more important
questions
• Create small groups for students who struggle with content or skills
EDMODO TOUR...
AP-STYLE ORAL INTERVIEW
• The first part of the speaking section will include a task that measures
speaking skills in an informal setting. There will be a conversation role-
play situation (an example of the interpersonal mode). Students will be
asked to interact with a recorded conversation. There will be five or six
opportunities for the students to answer. Each response will be 20
seconds in length. Students will have time to read an outline of the
simulated conversation and the instructions before participating in the
simulated conversation.

FOR NON-AP TEACHERS
• Because WL has no specific section on year-end standardized tests, our
summative assessment is the AP exam
• If we set that exam as the end-goal of our language program (flawed, though
it may be), we can scale back the content and skills to be appropriate to
developmental and curricular levels
• Students will become comfortable with the structure of the exam while
improving all three modes of communication
LOGISTICS OF INTERVIEWING ALL STUDENTS
MULTIPLE TIMES
• There are ways to interview students
personally, but many things can get in the
way (other students' questions, absences,
etc.)
• On the AP exam, students will have to
interact with computer recordings
• Create a way that students can listen and
record their responses online and submit
them to you for later review
INTERVIEW PROCESS: STEP-BY-STEP
1. Create interview questions, scoring rubric, and suggestions for improvement based on score
2. Record your voice asking the interview questions with an explanation of the process and time for
students to respond
3. Export your voice recording to .mp3 and post it to your website, blog, Edmodo site, etc.
4. Give students access to any computer and headphones with microphone (Their iPhone headphones
will work!)
5. Instruct students to open the site where your voice is saved and shrink the window to half the screen
6. Use the other half of the screen to open Vocaroo.com
7. Students start the Vocaroo recording and then your recording and answer the questions
8. Students save Vocaroo recording to QR that you can listen to using any device (or they can email if your
school allows)

  • 1. EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY FOR WORLD LANGUAGE EDMODO, AP-STYLE ORAL INTERVIEWS, AND MORE...
  • 2. MASTERY LEARNING • "So what is mastery learning? The concept is simple: Students master concepts and skills before going onto other learning. How do you know they mastered it? EDMODO AND MASTERY LEARNING • Each student has individual account • After core instruction and assessment, students who struggle are put into small groups visible only to them • The small group contains several resources for relearning the material: Quizlet, YouTube tutorials, etc.; as well as another assessment • Students use resources to relearn material individually using computer or device • Many students have more success on the assessment after relearning, and you can focus your attention on the five percent who need 1-on-1

EDMODO FEATURES • Save student work in a place that they can't lose it and doesn't clutter your desk • Use the "Note" feature to send reminders to classes or small groups, to post assignments, and to send study materials • You receive notifications when students complete assignments, they receive notifications from you when items are assigned or assessments are graded • Create quizzes with everything from matching to open-ended questions, with lower- level questions being computer graded to save your time for the more important questions • Create small groups for students who struggle with content or skills
  • 8. AP-STYLE ORAL INTERVIEW • The first part of the speaking section will include a task that measures speaking skills in an informal setting. There will be a conversation role- play situation (an example of the interpersonal mode). Students will be asked to interact with a recorded conversation. There will be five or six opportunities for the students to answer. Each response will be 20 seconds in length. Students will have time to read an outline of the simulated conversation and the instructions before participating in the simulated conversation. -Source: CollegeBoard AP Central

FOR NON-AP TEACHERS • Because WL has no specific section on year-end standardized tests, our summative assessment is the AP exam • If we set that exam as the end-goal of our language program (flawed, though it may be), we can scale back the content and skills to be appropriate to developmental and curricular levels • Students will become comfortable with the structure of the exam while improving all three modes of communication

LOGISTICS OF INTERVIEWING ALL STUDENTS MULTIPLE TIMES • There are ways to interview students personally, but many things can get in the way (other students' questions, absences, etc.) • On the AP exam, students will have to interact with computer recordings • Create a way that students can listen and record their responses online and submit them to you for later review
  • 11. INTERVIEW PROCESS: STEP-BY-STEP 1. Create interview questions, scoring rubric, and suggestions for improvement based on score 2. Record your voice asking the interview questions with an explanation of the process and time for students to respond 3. Export your voice recording to .mp3 and post it to your website, blog, Edmodo site, etc. 4. Give students access to any computer and headphones with microphone (Their iPhone headphones will work!) 5. Instruct students to open the site where your voice is saved and shrink the window to half the screen 6. Use the other half of the screen to open Vocaroo.com 7. Students start the Vocaroo recording and then your recording and answer the questions 8. Students save Vocaroo recording to QR that you can listen to using any device (or they can email if your school allows)
