Figurative language uses words or phrases in non-literal ways to make comparisons, add emphasis or clarity, or make writing more interesting. There are several types of figurative language including similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, assonance, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia. Similes use like or as to compare two unlike things, while metaphors make comparisons without using like or as. Idioms are phrases whose meanings cannot be determined literally but are understood through common usage.
