2. Papa’s Fishing Hole-Narrative Poem
I place my tiny hand in his
as we walk to Papa’s Fishing Hole.
I hand him a wiggling night crawler
fighting for his life.
The deadly hook squishes
through the worm’s head,
and I watch the brown guts ooze out.
Papa throws the pole’s long arm back
and then forward.
The line lands in a merky spot
along the reedy shore.
Now I get to reel it in.
Nothing yet, he says.
He casts again. I reel it in.
Still nothing.
Three time’s a charm, he says.
He casts.

3. Washed Away
Nothing's changed except me and the facts
And the sadness I didn't mean to start.
But it feels different now you've said
It's wrong, and I still can't see your point.
And I think as water runs over my hands that
That's really all there is or can be.
The gold is wearing off the infamous ring
And something wears away from around my heart.

Internal Rhyme- A rhyme between a word within a line and another, either at the
end of the same line or within another line.

6. Thinking Water
Instead of drinking water, Line Break
They gave me thinking water,
Now I’m really smart.
And instead of ice cream,
They gave me nice cream,
Now I’ve got a big heart.
Instead of hot sauce,
They gave me snot sauce,
Now my tongue is gooey when I talk.
And instead of candy bars
They gave me sandy bars,
Now my mouth is full of rocks.
And instead of tribal stories,
They read me bible stories,
Now I want to be a preacher
And instead of kool-aid
They gave me school-aid.
But I still don’t like my teacher.

10. Simile: Comparing one thing to another using the words LIKE or AS.

Metaphor: When you use a metaphor, you are saying that a person,
place, animal or thing IS some thing else, not just LIKE it!
Example: "My head teacher is a dragon."
"The Mayor glared with eyes of ice."
Idioms: A set expression of two or more words that means something
other than the literal meanings of its individual words.
Example: A piece of cake- Means very easy
As fresh as a daisy- Full of energy
Man’s best friend- The dog
