  1. Introduction: My name is Josh Svor and I teach in the West Fargo School District. I am honored to have the opportunity to discuss technology and student achievement with you. My presentation will provide you with key points that emphasize how technology increases student learning and achievement. Are there any questions before we get started? Feel free to ask questions throughout the presentation.
  2. I will begin by addressing the five key points I will be presenting to you. Technology supports the development of higher-order thinking skills Technology increases student participation Technology helps teachers understand individual learning styles Technology impacts the way students think, learn and interact Technology keeps students focused in there learning
  3. In the article ‘ How Does Technology Influence Student Learning? (Cradler, John) it states that learners apply their knowledge in many different ways leading to innovation and further understanding of content domain. Using technology for constructing artifacts and electronic information and communication resources support the development of higher order thinking skills. Students are taught to apply the processes of problem solving and then allowed opportunities to apply technology tools to develop solutions (i.e. Interactive video programs, intelligent tutor software). Furthermore, Cradler stated that Technology could enable the development of critical thinking skills when students use technology presentation and communication tools to present, publish and share results of projects.
  4. The article Technology Support for Whole Class Engagement (Swan, Karen, Kratcoski, Annette, Hooft, Mark, Campbell, Deborah) states that technology participation in the classroom activities can increase students’ engagement in those activities. Students reported that technology made learning ‘more fun,’ and that it helped them to learn because teachers made the work ‘more interesting’ and made them ‘pay more attention.’ It was also stated from Using the technology of today, in the classroom today. (Klopfer, Eric) that students use a variety of networking sites for educational purposes (i.e. google, yahoo, facebook). A survey indicated that 60% of students use networking sites for researching educational topics.
  5. According to Antionette Harvey-Woodall in the article Integrating Technology into the classroom: How does it impact student achievement she believes that students are able to understand the technology that the teacher presents and that utilizing professional development to educate teachers on the latest trends in technology will help them incorporate those ‘trends’ into the classroom. It was also mentioned that traditional methods of teaching can no longer be utilized to capture the interest of children who are being educated during the rapid growth of the computer age. There must be a change in the way standards are produced and modern technology needs to be incorporated when making the change.
  6. Emergence of social networking technology and the evolution of digital games have helped to shape the new ways in which teachers are communicating, operating and forming social constructs in the classroom. According to Eric Klopfer from the article ‘ Using the technology of today, in the classroom today ’ these technologies help to shape the way we think, work and live. In the article ‘ Integrating Technology into the classroom: How does it impact student achievement’ Antionette Harvey Woodall states that in the past few decades, school districts have increased spending on classroom technology because there is belief that a correlation exists between student achievement and the integration of technology into the classroom. The article stresses that it is important that educators focus on innovative ways to make the use of technology foster learning.
  7. In the article ‘Building Better Instruction’ by Kathy Brabee it is stated that it is best to use a variety of classroom strategies to keep students engaged. I will list some strategies stated in the article that have been found beneficial when keeping students focused on their learning. Identifying similarities and differences – comparison tasks, the use of metaphors and analogies (Kidspiration, Insipiration and Kid Pix) Summarizing and note taking – summarizing requires students to analyze information at a deep level. In note taking students must first determine what is most important and state the information. Reinforcing effort and providing recognition – deals with students attitudes and beliefs. It is important to reward students for achieving specific goals. Recognition if most effective when abstract Homework and practice – both provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding and strengthen their skills. Nonlinguistic Representation – can be expressed in a variety of forms, including graphic representations, mental pictures, drawings, physical models Cooperative Learning – powerful instructional strategy Setting objectives and providing feedback – setting objectives establishes a direction for learning. Specific, timely and regular feedback to students enhances their learning Generating and testing hypotheses – requires students to apply their knowledge and thus deepens their understanding Cues, Questions and Advance Organizers – gives students a preview of what they are about to learn or experience and helps to activate students prior knowledge. Cues and questions should focus on what is important as opposed to what is unusual. Advance organizers are most useful with information not easily presented in an organized manner. Some supportive technologies used (in the classroom) within the above strategies are: Word Processing, Web Resources, PDA’s, Inspiration, Kidpiration, Kids Pix, Digital Camera, Movie Maker, Power Point, Hyper Studio
  8. In conclusion, I have shared research that supports the importance of incorporating technology into the classroom and how it enhances student achievement. I will review my five key points again: 1.Technology supports the development of higher-order thinking skills 2. Technology increases student participation 3. Technology helps teachers understand individual learning styles 4. Technology impacts the way students think, learn and interact 5.
