Career Profile:
Degree qualified in computer science I have developed database reporting skills and
acquired programming skills in VB.Net. I used the programming skills to develop a
reporting tool that processes a script file of SQL statements to create a report and
output the result to worksheets in an Excel spreadsheet.
This tool was used from 2002 to the present to extract information from the following
databases (arranged in order of use) membership database (DataFlex language),
Triumph Accounting (DataFlex language), InControl Project Management program,
Timberline, Oracle 11 and 12 and Primavera. A part of the reporting requirements
was using my database skills to create ad hoc reports from the databases and also
create files to transfer information between databases. Some client reports
incorporated information from more than one source such as client project reports
using data extracted from Oracle and Primavera. Administration reports showing
timesheet information were also provided for human resource and project
administration reporting.
I have worked for 13 years as a branch accountant, 8 years in a combined role as a
project cost controller and timesheet administrator.
In my work I acquired hands on skills to provide project management support,
database reporting and accounting support. The database skills, based on my use of
SQL, are transferable to other database applications given a suitable orientation
period.
Whilst working as an accountant for 13 years I acquired practical administration
experience. I also had responsibility for the non-profit membership database and
developed skills in providing ad hoc reporting.
After I finished working for the non-profit organisation I worked in a project
management organisation for 8 years providing cost control, project reporting and
timesheet management administration. This included designing and providing
appropriate reports for internal and external use.
Achievements – Project Management
Major Projects
The 22 million dollar Onesteel Whyalla upgrade using Triumph as the accounting
system and InControl as the project management system.
2. The 140 million dollar Allegiance Nickel project providing cost control support and
accounting support using Timberline and InControl.
The 8 million dollar Central Eyre Iron feasibility study providing cost control,
timesheet administration support and ad hoc reports based on extracts from an Oracle
database.
Achievements – Branch Database Administration
When I commend work the database had little reporting capacity and functioned
mostly to provide a listing of financial members for electoral purposes.
Advised on upgrades required for the membership database and also started using the
reporting tool I had developed to produce various membership reports sorting on a
variety of attributes to provide tailor made reports.
Using the reporting tool reduced the requirement for outside programming services
and increased the flexibility of membership reporting.
Achievements – VB.Net Programming for SQL Query Writer
The query writer was based on the outline of a reporting tool that ran SQL scripts for
SQL and database training in a book by Michael Amundsen and Curtis Smith. I
enhanced the original outline to write the output to an Excel file and also set in place
administrative functions to record the databases available, the queries belonging to a
database and a also a Text Editor to provide for creation or editing of SQL scripts.
This tool was upgraded for my course project and I submitted approximately 250
pages of code.
Key Skills and Abilities
Administrator of Timesheet system with responsibility for training users and
following up issues with Oracle system support in South Africa
Administrator of Project Management systems setting up projects in the accounting or
project controls system under instruction from the project controls manager.
The types of reports provided for the organisations I worked for were payroll reports,
project specific reports and historical reports of project costs to use in providing
estimates for future projects.
3. Provide reports from timesheet and project management systems to human resources
and project controls.
When required write SQL statements and files of multiple SQL statements to provide
reports for project management, organisation management, accounting management
and human resources using data extracted from the organisation database.
Used Triumph, Timberline, InControl and Oracle to provide project management and
cost support.
