Cloud-Friendly Hadoop and Hive - StampedeCon 2013StampedeCon
`At the StampedeCon 2013 Big Data conference in St. Louis, Shrikanth Shankar, Head of Engineering at Qubole, presented Cloud-Friendly Hadoop and Hive. The cloud reduces the barrier to entry for many small and medium size enterprises into analytics. Hadoop and related frameworks like Hive, Oozie, Sqoop are becoming tools of choice for deriving insights from data. However, these frameworks were designed for in-house datacenters, which have different tradeoffs from a cloud environment, and making them run well in the cloud presents some challenges. In this talk, Shrikanth Shankar, Head of Engineering at Qubole, describes how these experiences taught us to extend Hadoop and Hive to exploit these new tradeoffs. Use cases will be presented that show how the challenges at large scale at Facebook are now making it extremely easy for a significantly smaller end user to leverage these technologies in the cloud.

Lifting the hood on spark streaming - StampedeCon 2015StampedeCon
At the StampedeCon 2015 Big Data Conference: Today if a byte of data were a gallon of water, in only 10 seconds there would be enough data to fill an average home, in 2020 it will only take 2 seconds. The Internet of Things is driving a tremendous amount of this growth, providing more data at a higher rate then we’ve ever seen. With this explosive growth comes the demand from consumers and businesses to leverage and act on what is happening right now. Without stream processing these demands will never be met, and there will be no big data and no Internet of Things. Apache Spark, and Spark Streaming in particular can be used to fulfill this stream processing need now and in the future. In this talk I will peel back the covers and we will take a deep dive into the inner workings of Spark Streaming; discussing topics such as DStreams, input and output operations, transformations, and fault tolerance.

This document discusses methods for estrous synchronization in cattle and sheep. Estrous synchronization aims to group females for calving, shorten breeding seasons, and reduce estrus detection. Key methods include using progesterone-releasing implants, pessaries, or feeding melengestrol acetate to extend the luteal phase. Prostaglandins are then used to induce luteolysis and estrus. Common synchronization protocols for cattle include Ovsynch, which uses GnRH and PGF2α, and CIDR-based protocols. Vaginal sponges and CIDR implants of varying durations can also be used in sheep and goats.

Economics and finance of Europe: An intensive ten-week programme
1. Economics and Finance of Europe
An intensive ten-week programme
The Diputación Foral de Bizkaia approached LSE Custom Programmes in
2007 to deepen selected citizens’ understanding of the latest trends within EU
economy, fiscal policy, competitiveness and trade.
LSE rigorously selects a small group of participants from the Basque country,
with a first degree, work experience and good English language ability. They
attend an interdisciplinary programme that draws on the European Institute,
the Government Department and the Department of International Relations. It
blends postgraduate lectures, giving participants a chance to mingle with other
students, with seminars specifically designed for the group and led by key LSE
academics.
Visits to specialist institutes, government departments and organisations
enhance participants’ understanding of the UK’s environment and culture, while
external speakers and events provide different perspectives on EU-level issues.
The students apply theoretical knowledge to the process of economic policy
making, debate trade and regulatory issues, undertake independent study
throughout and are formally assessed via presentations, essays and tests.
The benefits continue beyond the programme. LSE Custom Programmes
organises biannual alumni events in the Basque Country, enabling former
participants to continue networking with each other and with LSE once they
have returned home to put their new skills to use.

discovering a new city, new
culture and new people.’
Olga Gretchoukhina
‘Having one teacher for only eight
of us is an incredible opportunity.
I learned a lot about European
integration, which is essential for
my career.’
Marta Areitio
‘I would strongly recommend
applying to those who have
a profound interest not only
in Europe, its history and
institutions, but also in the
development of international
affairs and the role that several
global actors play in it.’
