In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Vijay Mallya’s company scraps veggie retail plan Vijay Mallya’s Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers has scrapped its Rs 500 crore ($110 million) plan to set up an Indian unit to sell fruits and vegetables. Mallya’s fertiliser company helped farmers in Karnataka improve water, soil and nutrition management to improve crop yields. It planned to buy vegetables, fruits from the producers and sell them to retailers.

Bharti enters mobile handset business Bharti on Sunday announced its entry into the fast-growing mobile handset business as group firm Beetel launched eight handsets in the price range of Rs 1,750-7,000. Beetel mobile phones will be available through a nationwide distribution network of over 4,000outlets across Delhi, Haryana, UP and Uttaranchal, Rajasthan, Punjab and the seven northeastern states.

8. Intex Technologies to foray into television segment Information technology devices maker Intex Technologies will enter the colour television and LCD TVs segment. The company will sell products under the 'Intex' brand which will be priced up to 10 per cent less than brands that are currently leading the market. On an average, LCDs are priced Rs 20,000 onwards, while branded TVs begin at Rs 5000. Intex currently manufacturers mobile phones, computers IT peripherals and DVD players at its three manufacturing units located in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu. The company is aiming to become a Rs 1,000 crore entity by March next year from the current Rs 600 crore.
