MyOcean scientists took part in this valuable COST initiative in particular for "Ocean reanalysis" cross-fertilization last 2-4 March 2015 in Liège, Belgium.
The main goals of the ESSEM COST Action ES1402 are to improve the coordination of the European efforts in the evaluation of ocean syntheses, to optimize their use and value, to ease their access, to promote their improvement and to raise confidence in their quality. Recommendations and guidelines will be provided on the evaluation, quality and applications of ocean syntheses to end users. These evaluations require cross-disciplinary meetings with experts in Earth Observation, ocean and atmosphere syntheses, air-sea flux measurements and modelling and physical oceanography. This Action will provide the optimal framework for integrating these communities.
Evaluation of Heavy, Toxic and Trace Metals Contamination in Fish, Seawater, ...Dr. Mohamed Saad Seoud
A comprehensive environmental assessment of the Arabian Gulf Coast in the State of
Kuwait was carried out by assessing levels of heavy, toxic and rare mineral pollutants in
coastal sediments, beach sand, shells and sea water collected from the coastline. By
Using (Inductively coupled plasma - Mass spectrometry) ICP-MS technique, we
analyzed (Al, Mn, Mg, Na, K, Ca, Zn, Ba, Sr, Co, Cu, Cd, Pb, Ag, Ni, Fe). The results of
potential environmental risks indicated that the study area was heavily enriched with (Al,
Mn, Mg, Na, K, Ca), moderately enriched with (Zn, Ba, Sr, Co), and low levels of (Cu,
Cd, Pb, Ag, Ni, Fe). However, in general, these pollutant levels were not exceed the EPA
and the Canadian ISQG values and still lower than some standardized reference values all
over the world. Furthermore, the bioaccumulation index indicated that gastropod shells
and pelecypod shells had greater ability to concentrate Fe, Na, K and Al, which may be
attributable to the shape of them. Regarding the seawater samples, Na and K levels were
higher than their average oceanic metal concentrations. Moreover, the average
concentrations of heavy metals in the studied area, especially those of Pb, K, Fe, and Zn,
were lower than the coasts of many countries all over the world. The moderate
enrichment of some metals in the studied area could be partially attributed to
anthropogenic activities, notably oil spills from oil tankers and exploration, transportation
and from saline water desalination plants in Kuwait Coast, the nearby nuclear reactors
overlooking the Arabian Gulf and other industrial activities in the region. Results were in
accordance with recommended daily intake allowance by WHO/FAO. From this study, it
was noticed that the concentrations of Heavy, Toxic and Trace Metals for Kuwaiti
Environmental Marine Samples are lower than the worldwide average value. Results
obtained are discussed and compared with the international recommended data.
C5.02: The Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network: data for decisions -...Blue Planet Symposium
Ocean acidification describes the changes in seawater chemistry that result from the uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide by the ocean. The changes this century are predicted to have profound impacts on marine ecosystems with potential flow-on effects to economic and environmental services the ecosystems provide, including fisheries and aquaculture, coastal protection, and tourism. The Global Ocean Acidification - Observing Network (GOA-ON) has been developed in response to the widespread concern of the impacts of ocean acidification. The network is an internationally coordinated effort, combining ‘bottom up’ collaboration by the research community with ‘top down’ encouragement and support from a range of international bodies and organisations, including the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). The aim is to provide chemical and biological data from local to global scales that can be used to improve understanding of ocean acidification conditions and ecosystem responses, and to provide uniformly collected and quality-controlled data to assist policy making through research products and model-based projections of ecosystem responses. Capability development is a key aspect of the network. The status and future plans of the GOA-ON initiative will be described – providing the opportunity for additional involvement in its implementation.
Studies on the Nuclear Activities Effects and it’s Impact on the Marine Life ...Dr. Mohamed Saad Seoud
Paper in the work presents the first comprehensive and complete report on the concentration of on natural radioactivity measurements, other fissionable isotopes and the hazard parameters in the NORM samples from different marine environment Samples of the Arabian Gulf region (Beach Muddy/Sands, Arabian Gulf Water, Shells and Different types of Marine Fish) collected along the eastern coastline of the State of Kuwait. All samples were measured using gamma spectrometry technique, with high purity germanium detector. The results show that the average activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, 137Cs and 60Co for Kuwaiti Environmental Marine Samples are lower than the worldwide average value. The worldwide average values (32, 45 and 420) for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. The activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, 137Cs and 60Co for Kuwaiti Environmental Marine Samples ranged between [(0.18 - 10.43) Bq/kg with average of 3.26 ± 0.80 Bq/kg, (-0.23–3.63) Bq/kg with average of 1.15 ± 0.67 Bq/kg, (1.27-110.92) Bq/kg with average of 43.62 ± 1.7 Bq/kg, (0.50 - 10.61) Bq/kg with average of 3.11 ± 0.34 Bq/kg and (ND – 0.35) Bq/kg with average of 0.01 ± 0.01 Bq/kg] respectively. Marine Environment Samples of the Arabian Gulf region in Kuwait have been investigated. Samples were collected along the eastern coastline of the State of Kuwait. All samples were collected from different beach sites in Kuwait. These samples were collected randomly from different locations in these sites (from north to south along the eastern coastline of Arabian Gulf). According to the Kuwaiti samples, the estimated range for (Radium Equivalent Rate, External Hazard Index, Internal Hazard Index, Absorbed Dose, annual effective dose, Gamma Index, Alpha Index) is [(0.79 – 21.80) Bq/kg with average of 8.26 ± 1.90 Bq/kg, (0.00 – 0.06) Bq/kg with average of 0.02 ± 0.01 Bq/kg, (0.00–0.09) Bq/kg with average of 0.03 ± 0.01 Bq/kg,(0.36 - 10.68) Bq/kg with average of 4.04 ± 0.86 Bq/kg, (0.44 – 13.10) Bq/kg with average of 4.96 ± 1.06 Bq/kg, (0.00–0.08) Bq/kg with average of 0.03 ± 0.01 Bq/kg and (0.00 – 0.05) Bq/kg with average of 0.02 ± 0.00 Bq/kg], respectively. The estimated hazard parameters in all Kuwaiti samples are lower than the recommended limits for occupationally worker. From this study, it was noticed that the average activity concentrations of 226Ra series, 232Th series, 40K, 137Cs and 60Co for Kuwaiti Environmental Marine Samples are lower than the worldwide average value. Results obtained are discussed and compared with the international recommended data.

Kuwait Action Plan:
From year 1983 to1985 ROPME investigated many sectors crossing ROPME Sea area.
Every state member studies their own sectors (sampling, analyses and quality
assurance). My work participated in the sampling task (3years project).
Rehabilitation of Kuwait Beaches after gulf war, 18-20 November 1996, Kuwait:
After Iraqi crises 1990 , EPA started monitoring the effect of oil pollution on the
Kuwaiti beaches 5 stations were selected along Kuwait beaches, locations were differ in
ecological structure (muddy, sandy, rocky) , meiofauna were sampled , extracted,
analyzed, and many reports and papers were published
Desalination Power Station effects on Meiofauna community:
During 1997-1998 new project started in studding the effect of desalination power
plants on meiofauna communities, two locations were selected from the inlet and out let
locations, I worked on sampling, extracting, Quantity and quality meiofauna
identifications, statistical analysis and reports were prepared.
Harmful Algae monitoring project:
Since the 2 major fish kill occurred during a year 1999 and 2001, EPA started a algal
bloom emergency national plan many tasks were established, my task was collecting
harmful algae samples, sea water quality samples, oceanography samples.( from2001
to 2012 )
JETRO project:
From 2006 to 2008 EPA and JETRO Company from State of Japan investigated project
for rehabilitation of Kuwait Bay my task in this project sharing on sampling and
analysis of meiofauna on shore (JETRO Experimental mud flat) and off shore from
investigated stations also hourly monitoring current and nutrients contents of sea water
flow inter or out from JETRO experimental mud flat.
Mishrif sewage station default:
During Aug 2009 Kuwait faced a disaster of Mishrif sewage station shutdown, which
caused a lot of untreated sewage spilled in the sea. EPA started a monitoring plan for
the 4 main sources, Al-Aqsa, Al Khatabi, Messela and Sas out let monitoring stations.
My tasks were:
• Meiofauna: collecting meiofauna samples (onshore) extracting analysis and do
statistical analysis to prepare reports.

• Phytoplanktons sampling(offshore)
• Water quality samples (off shore ).
Marina pollution Monitoring:
Marina pollution monitoring project started on 2011, my task was to collect meiofauna,
plankton and oceanographic parameters, also extracting, analysis and do statistical
analysis for meiofauna to prepare reports.
JETRO project:
From 2006 to 2008 EPA and JETRO Company from State of Japan investigated
project for rehabilitation of Kuwait Bay my task in this project shairing on sampling
and analysis of meiofauna on shore (JETRO Experimental mud flat) and off shore
from investigated stations also hourly monitoring current and nutrients contents of
sea water flow inter or out from JETRO experimental mud flat.
Working teams involved:
• Technical emergency team. Team respond to emergency environment crises
such as marine oil spill, sewage effluents in the shores, fishkill , redtide,
marine organisms death.
