Cell phones use cellular communication technology which divides geographic areas into cells serviced by low-power transmitters in cell towers. Each cell has its own receiver and transmitter and covers a small area, usually a few square miles. The number and size of cells depends on population density, with more smaller cells used in cities. The paper will locate and observe UMTS cell towers in Bulacan, Philippines to analyze their positioning and coverage area as well as measure important tower properties.

- 1. INTRODUCTION Cell phone is the largest-volume consumer electronics device. It is a bidirectional radio that enables simultaneous transmission and reception. Cellular communication is a form of communication technology that enables the use of mobile phones. It is based on the geographic division of the communication coverage area into cells, and within cells. The typical cell covers only several square miles and contains its own receiver and low-power transmitter. The coverage of a cell depends upon the density of users in a given area. For a heavily populated city, many small cells are used to ensure service. In less populated rural areas, fewer cells are used. Short cell antenna towers limit the cell coverage area. Higher towers give broader coverage. The cell site is designed to reliably serve only persons and vehicles in its small cell area. A cell site or cell tower is a cellular-enabled mobile device site where antennae and electronic communications equipment are placed. In this paper, the students will locate UMTS cell towers in Bulacan (NAMRIA Map 3130-IMalolosCity) and observe its positioning and coverage. UMTS or Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service is a third-generation (3G) broadband, packet-based transmission of text, digitized voice, video, and multimedia at data rates up to 2 megabits per second (Mbps).
