Overview of the Learning Week
Welcome to ECE 205: Child Development. In this course you will become familiar with the influences on child
development by gaining a better understanding of why studying child development is important. You will be
discussing the major theorists and their theories, as well as identifying the developmental ages and stages
associated with each. In the Week One guidance, Chapters 1 and 3 will be examined.
Think about your chosen profession.
Are you familiar with the ages, stages, and milestones of child development?
Do you know how to work with children of all developing stages?
Do you understand developmentally appropriate practices in relation to a child’s age and
developmental stage?

In your profession, you will help children, families, and colleagues better understand child development by
empowering them with ways to reach children at their developmental stage that will help with motor,
cognitive, communication, social-emotional, and self-help skills.
This week you will begin by examining your own personal beliefs about child development. You will be asked
to think back to when you were a child and remember things that contributed to your development. You will
also decide why understanding child development and the study of child development is important in your
chosen profession. Developmental theories will also be examined.

You may be asking why the study of child development is so important. You, as someone working with
children, play a huge role and have a great impact on each child by providing appropriate experiences,
support, and direction child so they reach their optimum developmental level.
What is Child Development and Why Study It?
In 1976, Gene R. Medinnus determined in his Child Study and Observation Guide that there are four principal
reasons for studying children. They are:
1. Having a natural curiosity about human development
2. Needing assistance in guiding children’s development
3. Wanting to better predict behavior
4. Pursuing an interest in understanding one’s own actions. (Groark, McCarthy, & Kirk, 2014).
Because so many children each day are in some type of childcare center, early childhood classroom, or clinic, it
is vital that caregivers provide appropriate support. Professionals working with young children have the
opportunity to impact all aspects of child development while they are in contact with these children.

One of the keys to working with young children and providing them with the best care and education possible is our individual understanding as caregivers and educators of how young children grow and develop. Only with this understanding will we be able to foster appropriate development of the whole child. As Groark, McCarthy, & Kirk (2014) mention, “It is essential that caregivers understand typical human development because that understanding assists them in predicting how a child will learn and progress through specific areas of child development, or developmental domains” (Section 1.1, para. 2). The purpose of this discussion is to help you gain the necessary understanding not only of what the major developmental domains are, but also how each are intricately pieced together.

· Toddler: 1 – 3 years

· Developmental milestone comprises of a set of skills that children within a shared age group are expected to have achieved. The millstones are classified according to their distinct developmental domain. Five domains are used to characterize typical human development which enables caregivers to gain insight into how children will learn and progress through the various developmental domains. With appropriate knowledge of developmental domains, caregivers can facilitate optimal development of the child by providing proper support and direction thus influencing the child's social skills and academic competency Developmental milestones are only considered a framework as they are only a guide for caregivers to compare each individual child with predetermined human development expectation across different ages. Today, experts use several different theories as a means of finding the best way to describe, explain and predict children’s behavior.
Child development theories rely upon a few key theoretical questions, including whether development is continuous from birth to adulthood or progresses in distinct stages; whether development is universal or individual; and whether genetics or environment are more critical in child development. Summary of children’s developmental characteristics
Child 1
The child depicted traits that met the different milestones for the age. She shows significant eye-hand coordination as evident when she reached for the toy. Her sensory milestones were massively evident during the observation period. She not only used both her hands to explore the teddy bear, but she also moved it to her mouth. She is able to seek attention by making babbling sounds, an indication that the child is progressing well in her communication milestones. The child also illustrated both play and social skills when she raised her hands to be picked up and enjoyed playing peek-a-boo with her mother. She is also able to feed well.
The child’s growth and development are promising. However, she indicates strengths in certain milestones unlike in others. The child’s strengths are evident in the sensory, communication, and feeding milestones (Pathways.org, n.d.). She also indicates strengths in coordination abilities as well as play and social skills. However, the child’s motor milestones were lacking but the period the child was observed could have skewed the results.
Based on the child’s age, growth and development, she is progressing well. She has marked most of her milestones and exceeded some (Pathways.org, n.d.). Her parent indicated that the child enjoys bath time. She also established that the child is always playful and tolerates diaper and clothes change unless she is hungry or unwell. The parent’s response and the observed development of the child ascertain that she is likely to perform more functions at a significant rate (Pathways.org, n.d.). Therefore, no much effort is needed for the child’s developmental improvement.
Child 2
This child walks alone without much support. He is able to remove items obstructing his way, including toys and pulls them behind him. In addition to this, he is able to move up and down the stairs with little support. The child can feed himself despite being playful with food. He can turn doorknobs and open the door. He is also able to drink from an open cup even though he makes messes. His communication was impressive as he could easily form a sentence. However, his inability to climb up the coach was questionable yet he performed much more difficult tasks.
The child’s developmental milestones are appropriate for his age. One major strength is that the child is independent and does most things alone. He is able to walk alone without tripping or falling, establishing that his motor milestones are his strengths despite lagging in some of these milestones (Pathways.org, n.d.). Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Rita
Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Although she agreed to have an advocate and the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) meet her at the hospital, Rita tearfully stated that she did not want to file a police report at that time because she did not want to upset her family. The nurse examiner interviewed Rita, collected evidence, recorded any injuries, administered antibiotics for possible sexually transmitted infections, and gave Rita emergency contraception in case of pregnancy. The advocate stayed with Rita during the procedure, supporting her and validating her experience, and gave her a referral for individual crisis counseling at our agency.
My treatment goals for Rita included alleviation of rape trauma syndrome symptoms that included shame and self-blame, validation of self-worth and empowerment, and processing how it would feel to discl.

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Rita
Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Although she agreed to have an advocate and the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) meet her at the hospital, Rita tearfully stated that she did not want to file a police report at that time because she did not want to upset her family. The nurse examiner interviewed Rita, collected evidence, recorded any injuries, administered antibiotics for possible sexually transmitted infections, and gave Rita emergency contraception in case of pregnancy. The advocate stayed with Rita during the procedure, supporting her and validating her experience, and gave her a referral for individual crisis counseling at our agency.
My treatment goals for Rita included alleviation of rape trauma syndrome symptoms that included shame and self-blame, validation of self-worth and empowerment, and processing how it would feel to discl.

Welcome to ECE 205: Child Development. In this course you
will become familiar with the influences on child
development by gaining a better understanding of why studying
child development is important. You will be
discussing the major theorists and their theories, as well as
identifying the developmental ages and stages
associated with each. In the Week One guidance, Chapters 1 and
3 will be examined.

What is Child Development and Why Study It?
In 1976, Gene R. Medinnus determined in his Child Study and
Observation Guide that there are four principal
reasons for studying children. They are:
1. Having a natural curiosity about human development
2. Needing assistance in guiding children’s development
3. Wanting to better predict behavior
4. Pursuing an interest in understanding one’s own actions.
(Groark, McCarthy, & Kirk, 2014).
Because so many children each day are in some type of
childcare center, early childhood classroom, or clinic, it
4. is vital that caregivers provide appropriate support.
Professionals working with young children have the
opportunity to impact all aspects of child development while
they are in contact with these children.
According to our course text, “it is essential to understand
typical human development because that
understanding assists child caregivers in predicting how a child
will learn and progress in developmental
domains” (Groark et al., pg. 3).
Entering my classroom for the first time, as a teacher, I knew
how important it was to get to know my
students, to get to know the families, and to reach each child at
their own level of development. But I
wondered, how was I going to do this? I started by getting to
know my students. I had a bulletin board that
showcased each student for one week. I had them do an “All
About Me Bag” where the families filled out
questionnaires. The greatest thing I did was simply talk to my
students. This takes only a few days, and I could
tell which students were on typical developing levels and which
students would need more help. I could then
5. begin differentiating my instruction for each child to take them
from where they were to where they needed
to be.

There are five spheres of development that researchers look at
as children develop.

domains are interdependent on one another

can stagger, and even regress with no long term effects. Many
things can influence a child’s development. For
example, the environment, genetics, birth, etc. play major roles
in a child’s development. This brings us to the
nature vs. nurture debate. The argument comes down to which
influence is more predominate in a child’s
development. Each of you has probably had an experience or
background that leads you to believe one
contributes more than the other.
Nature vs. Nurture is:
A major issue in many disciplines including politics and is
concerned with the influence that biology,
genetics, and overall heredity has along with environmental
influences. The questions are: which traits
are children born with and which traits are results of
experiences? Are some of these innate
characteristics changeable or are they fixed? Does our
environment have a strong enough influence so
that it can change some of the impact of nature’s influences?
Can we change our life course trajectory
through nurturing, relationships, learning, and experiencing? So
the issue is how much does each
contribute to an individual and what happens when they
combine (Groark et al., p. 12).
There are six developmental stages that child development
experts and researchers look at as children
develop.

Oftentimes, assessments must be performed to determine if a
child is developing at a typical rate during each
of these stages. In child development a child’s actual age is
measured by the time in days, months, and years
the child has been on earth—this is called the chronological
age.
A child is said to have typical development in the above
developmental stages if they attain the predicted
milestones that are anticipated for their chronological age
(Groark et al., 2014 ). Early identification of a child
that may not be developing typically is important as early
intervention can intervene to delay further

As you begin working with young children, you will be able to
identify characteristics and behaviors that
children display that might be different than other children.
Many of these issues need to be observed and
even fostered in your care, and most will develop normally on
their own. For example, a typically developing
four year old may speak in complete sentences while another
10. child may have delayed speech due to constant
ear infections. When you mention concerns to parents,
oftentimes they already know and understand the
problem, but others want a professional to “see what they see”.
When approaching the situation with
parents, make sure you are respectful, caring, and well
intentioned so that the parents trust you and want to
build a relationship with you. It is important that you gather as
much historical information from the families
before you begin working with a child, as they can give genetic,
birth, and other illness related experiences the
child may have had that can affect development.
Developmental theories provide perspectives for understanding
children's development (Groark et al., 2014).
These theories provide early childhood professionals with
background research that has been observed by
researchers and theorists.

The debate regarding nature vs. nurture and how it impacts
