- To start at the beginning, let’s ask ourselves what is meant by evidence-based reading instruction. To put it simply, it is the practices for teaching reading that have been proven effective by research. The evidence base has been drawn from two sources. CLICKThe first is the findings of empirical studies conducted by researchers who have investigated various aspects of reading instruction. These studies have been carried out in controlled settings using rigorous methods to collect and analyze data. CLICKThe second body of evidence comes from research done by expert classroom teachers or other highly-skilled practitioners. Although this kind of research is not usually as rigorous as empirical research, it is a valuable source of information about reading instruction.Together, the empirical research and the expert practitioner research form the evidence base for what is known as evidence-based reading instruction, or EBRI.
- Most researchers who study adult reading instruction agree that reading is a complex skill which is a combination of several subskills. Researchers generally split the skill of reading into four component skills: alphabetics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Good readers of any age use all these skills as they engage with printed text. Let’s look at each component separately.
