This document discusses high-tech architecture and the works of Italian architect Paolo Soleri. It defines high-tech architecture as a style that emerged in the 1970s incorporating elements of industry and technology into designs with an emphasis on exposed steel structures. It describes Soleri's concept of "arcology" which aimed to synthesize architecture and ecology in democratic cities. Specifically, it outlines Soleri's plan for Mesa City, which proposed giant vertical urban centers that condensed living and working activities to conserve the natural environment.

2. WHAT IS HI-TECH ARCHITECTURE ?
High-tech architecture, also known as Late Modernism or
Structural Expressionism, is an architectural style that emerged in
the 1970s, incorporating elements of high-tech industry and
technology into building design. High-tech architecture served as a
bridge between modernism and post modernism.
Hi Tech structures reveal their structure on the outside as well as
the inside, but with visual emphasis placed on the internal steel
skeletal structure.
These structures are known for incorporating the lastest
technology as well as modern elements such as prefabricated
components, glass walls and steel frames.
Hi-Tech architects tend to expose the technical aspects such as
ducts, elevator shafts etc. on the external façade.
It was a synthesis of the structure, services, ecology, materials
used, and character of the building.
3. PAOLO SOLERI ( 1919 – 2013)
Paolo Soleri was an Italian architect. He established the
educational Cosanti Foundation and Arcosanti.
He coined the concept of 'arcology' – a synthesis of architecture
and ecology as the philosophy of democratic society. He was one
of the best known city planners of the 20th century.
He explored the countless possibilities of human aspirationthrough
his works as an architect, urban designer, artist, craftsman, and
philosopher.
Soleri coined the term “ARCOLOGY” which was a theory of his, a
cross between architecture and ecology. The idea was that cities
should reflect both human aspirations as well as the shape and
needs of the earths’s environment.
Soleri’s first comprehensive vision of a community is Mesa City, an
example of his idea, “Arcology”
4. MESA CITY
Soleri drew up the plans for a series of gigantic urban centres
that extend vertically into space rather than horizontally into
the ground.
These meagstructures were designed both to conserve the
natural surroundings and to intensify the human activities of
living and working by condensing them spatially.
The resulting integrated total environments would provide
for all the needs of rational ,aesthetic human beings
