2. Cinematography
• Long shots are used to establish the setting of the film. The audience are
able to understand that this is set in the city due to the street and city lights.
• Mid shots of signs are also shown to make it clear to the audience that it is
set in Ojai.
• We also see close ups of the American flag to make it clearer to us the
country of which the film is set it. This automatically allows the audience to
understand the type of film they will be expecting to see as there is a huge
difference between films that are produced in USA compared to other
countries.
3. Mise-en-scene
• The majority of the students in the school are dressed
casually in t-shirts, jeans, shorts and trainers.
• However, with a few exceptions the group who are
known to be ‘popular’ are a set of females who are
dressed in heels, shorts skirts and dresses.
• This gives the audience an impression that everyone
must dress according to the specific category they
belong to in order to fit in.
4. Sound
• Non-diagetic sounds of ‘la, la, la’ being repeated are
used to create the music for the opening of the film. This
creates a fun and positive feel.
• We also hear diagetic sounds of people talking in the
background and the school bell ringing to give us the
sense that the film is set in a school. We expect to hear a
lot of background noise as schools are full of noisy
students.
5. Editing
• Titles appear throughout the opening scene and are plain, white and
sans serif. This connotes purity and seriousness which may have
links to the narrative.
• However, the main title ‘Easy A’ is red and white. Red connotes
danger and love whereas white connotes pureness and innocence.
These can also be used to identify any links in the narrative about
the protagonist.
