The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), through its Digital Access Programme, provided support in 2018 for people in South Africa involved in community networks to attend the Third Summit on Community Networks in Africa, co-organised by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and the Internet Society.
In 2018, the summit was hosted by APC-member Zenzeleni Networks Non-Profit Company (NPC) and took place in Wild Lubanzi, South Africa. In total, 18 individuals were sponsored to participate in the summit thanks to DFID's support.
What follows is part of our effort to capture the activities, results and lessons learned from the Pilot Mentoring project. This pilot project was instrumental in designing the multi-year, multi-country project to enable community networks in Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, which APC is implementing with funding from DFID.
Women are among the most oppressed groups across the developing world. But in many cases, they also have the tools necessary to bring entire communities out of poverty. These powerful photos embody the changes women are making.

Though separated by geographical barriers, we've been taken by the acceptance and friendliness that we've seen in all of our sites. We've compiled some of our favorite moments with people on the ground.

2. The Masaka site team hosted the 4th Annual East Africa Summit.
3. The three-day Summit brought together FSD’s site teams from Kenya
and Uganda – Jinja, Kakamega, Masaka, and Mombasa – to reflect and
to strengthen FSD’s programs in East Africa.
4. The Summit included team building activities, program practices, and
a community partner workshop. Additionally, the wonderful town of
Masaka was introduced!
5. The community partner workshop was the first of its kind to include all
East Africa site team members.
6. The workshop focused on FSD’s asset-based approach and practices for
implementing sustainable development.
7. The workshop was just one contribution from the Summit that has
increased the capacity of the site teams to make a positive impact on
their local communities, program participants, and community partners.
8. Although the Masaka team was sad to see the other site teams leave,
they were happy to get started implementing the new ideas they learned
throughout the Summit!
9. A special thanks to Matthew Lynch, FSD’s International Program
Coordinator in Masaka, for covering the East Africa Summit.
