SurinameSGP is implemented by the United Nations Development
Programme UNDP on behalf of the GEF partnership, and is
executed by the United Nations Office for Project
Services UNOPS
“This initiative will utilize SGP’s mechanisms and experience in Suriname’s
interior to further support community-level initiatives and programs focusing spe-
cially on actions to support women and other vulnerable groups in responding to
the impacts of climate change “ UNDP Country Director, Thomas Gittens
Small Island Developing States
Community-based Adaptation
Programme SIDS-CBA
The national strategy of SIDS-CBA
is to reduce vulnerability and in-
crease the adaptive capacity of
communities in Suriname to man-
age the risks of climate change.
Through this initiative Suriname will
participate in a special programme
for community based adaptation on
climate change challenges. With
assistance from the National Steer-
ing Committee, the CBA strategy
was approved in 2011 and will be
implemented from 2012 to 2016.
Suriname is particularly susceptible
to the harmful impacts of climate
change due to rising sea-levels and
the country’s low-lying coastal
zone. The SGP will work with vener-
able communities to identify and
implement community based adap-
tation measures, through small
grants (up to US$50,000) and pro-
vide technical and capacity building
support.
If you are a community based or-
ganization or national NGO with
funds for adaptation projects,
please contact Tanja Lieuw for more
detailed information on how to ap-
ply.
SIDS-CBA is funded by the Austra-
lian Overseas Development Aid
AUSAID. The current funding for the
strategy is 170,000 USD.
New Project– Biodiversity Training School
For the next two years the Small Grants Programme will support the Panda Foundation to
establish the first biodiversity training school in Suriname. GEF SGP granted the founda-
tion 50,000 USD to conserve the traditional Maroon knowledge regarding biodiversity,
nature and culture in Brokopondo. The funding will help establish a training school to pro-
mote biodiversity by conducting research on Tonka Island and the surrounding environ-
ment. The project also aims to preserve the local Saramacan knowledge by recruiting
young Saramacanans from the surrounding villages to be trained as future tree spotters
and resource guides for forest management. The project will be lead by Frits van Troon,
the chair of Panda Foundation and expert botanist.
Latin American and
Caribbean Regional
Workshop
The GEF SGP Regional Workshop was
held in November 14-18th in Managua,
Nicaragua. Thirty National Coordinators
[NCs] came together for a 5 day regional
workshop to discuss the implementation
of its Fifth Operational Phase in the re-
gion. The workshop provided training and
guidance on the vision and strategy of
the programme, results based manage-
ment framework and GEF’s visibility pol-
icy for the next four years.
The meeting also provided an opportunity
for NCs to share lessons and good prac-
tices on community-based approaches to
biodiversity conservation, climate change
mitigation and adaptation, land degrada-
tion, international waters and chemicals.
NCs were able to participate in field visits
to project sites in Nicaragua, review their
work plan and discuss targets and strate-
gies to address various challenges facing
their country’s program.

Costa Rica
Mission Report
September 19th-23rd
The goal of the mission
was to obtain a clear over-
view of the main objectives
of the GEF SGP, to receive
the lessons learned from
the SGP Costa Rica experi-
ences and to understand
the role of the Country
Programme Strategy, the
grants allocation, project
cycle, monitoring and
evaluation, National Steer-
ing Committee, co-
financing and forming of
partnerships.
The mission was deemed
necessary due the follow-
ing factors: the SGP
Operational Manual is not
always clear, and queries
through email or skype are
not always efficient. The
coordinator from Suriname
was new to the office and
found the mission very
enlightening, especially
since there was no transfer
of information from the
previous NC. The coordi-
nator from Trinidad and
Tobago also found this to
be very useful since it was
possible to have a number
of questions answered in a
more efficient way through
face to face meetings in-
stead of email exchanges.
The mission was consid-
ered successful by all par-
ticipants and recom-
mended for future newly
installed NC’s. It was also
noted that participation
from Programme Assis-
tants and at least one NSC
member would be useful.
Both coordinators recog-
nized their countries faced
similar policy challenges.
Therefore, efforts would be
made to form stronger col-
laborations between the
two SGP programmes.

National Steering
Committee Member
Mayra Esseboom
“I think SGP can be an effective
way to reach and help (rural)
communities with different is-
sues related to our and their
environment. What I especially
like of SGP is that every coun-
try has the possibility to adjust
the program to your home
situation. “
Ms. Esseboom was appointed to
the National Steering Commit-
tee in 2009 as a representative
of the Anton de Kom University
of Suriname, AdeKUS. Currently
she is employed at the Centre
for Agricultural Research
(CELOS) as a Researcher on
Non-Timber Forest Products
(ntfp’s). For her research on
the potentials of NTFP’s she
frequently works with different
communities in CELOS’ forestry
research projects. Her research
focuses on the commercializa-
tion of ntfp’s, traditional knowl-
edge and different environ-
mental awareness projects.
Before joining CELOS she
worked Foundation for Forest
Management and Production
Control in Suriname (Stichting
voor Bosbeheer en
Bostoezicht). After her study at
Wageningen University and
Research Centre (WUR) she
held several functions in the
Netherlands.

Harold Gerds– Financial Intern
Hello, my name is Harold Gerds and I will be interning at the SGP office for three months. I’m
from The Netherlands where I’m currently studying Banking and Insurance at Hanze
University at the School of Applied Sciences. As an intern at the SGP office I will apply my
knowledge about finance to projects by evaluating budgets and help ongoing projects with
their financial issues, such as cost calculations and providing recommendations.
Cassandra Casillas– United States Peace Corps Response Volunteer
Hello! For the last six months I’ve had the exciting opportunity to work at SGP Suriname.
During my time here I had the chance to see first hand the kind of support the SGP provides
Suriname’s interior communities. I’ve worked closely with Peace Corps Volunteers living in the
interior by providing technical assistance in the grant writing process and even had the chance
to write a couple grants myself! My Peace Corps service will come to a close at the end of June
and I wish nothing but the best for Tanja, Harold and SGP Suriname.

  • 4. Harold Gerds– Financial Intern Hello, my name is Harold Gerds and I will be interning at the SGP office for three months. I’m from The Netherlands where I’m currently studying Banking and Insurance at Hanze University at the School of Applied Sciences. As an intern at the SGP office I will apply my knowledge about finance to projects by evaluating budgets and help ongoing projects with their financial issues, such as cost calculations and providing recommendations. Cassandra Casillas– United States Peace Corps Response Volunteer Hello! For the last six months I’ve had the exciting opportunity to work at SGP Suriname. During my time here I had the chance to see first hand the kind of support the SGP provides Suriname’s interior communities. I’ve worked closely with Peace Corps Volunteers living in the interior by providing technical assistance in the grant writing process and even had the chance to write a couple grants myself! My Peace Corps service will come to a close at the end of June and I wish nothing but the best for Tanja, Harold and SGP Suriname.
