In June 1559, he led an expedition from Vera Cruz to Florida with the goals of establishing a Gulf port and overland route to Santa Elena. He arrived off the coast of Florida in July 1559 and established the city of Santa Maria de Filipinos in present-day Pensacola Bay in August 1559. However, his expedition was ruined in September 1559 when a large storm destroyed much of his fleet.
Mountain Men roamed the Rocky Mountains between 1810 to 1840 to trap beaver pelts, which were extremely popular in Europe at the time. The Mountain Men faced many hardships in the wilderness, including starvation, dehydration, extreme weather, and attacks from wild animals or Native Americans. They would look forward to the annual July rendezvous, where trappers would meet up to trade furs, resupply, and socialize after a year of solitude. After overtrapping depleted the beaver population, the Mountain Men played an important role in westward expansion by using their skills and knowledge of the area to serve as explorers and guides for emigrants traveling west.
