What is an Earthquake?
Is a sudden shaking of the ground caused by a sudden slip on
a fault.
Energy from the earth’s interior makes the ground move.
Friction holds the rocks together but when there is so much
stress, the friction is overcome, and there is a sudden move in
the ground that causes an earthquake.
www.fourora.com
Two types of earthquakes
1.Tectonic Earthquakes- are produced by sudden
movement along faults and plate boundaries.
2.Volcanic Earthquakes- Earthquakes induced by rising
lava or magma beneath active volcanoes

www.fourora.com
WHY DO GEOLOGISTS CANNOT YET
PREDICT EARTHQUAKES?
Geologists don’t have enough understanding about the
condition at the depths where quake starts and
spreads.
They cant be sure when and where stress will be
released along a fault.

SUMMARY
An earthquake is caused when rocks suddenly move in the
earth’s crust. The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but
they get stuck at their edges. When they get stuck, they build up
a huge amount of energy. Then they move suddenly, releasing
this energy in waves that travel through the earth’s crust and
cause the shaking that we feel.

TRUE OR FALSE?

Philippines is located
along the Pacific Ring of
Fire.
www.fourora.com
Earthquakes are not
associated with faults.
www.fourora.com
A fault is a break in the Earth’s
crust, and along the break, NO
movement has taken place.
www.fourora.com
Energy form inside the Earth
exerts a force on the rocks.

When a portion of the land
sinks, a mountain is formed.
