Earth and earth systems
PRELIMINARY:
> CHECKING OF ATTENDANCE
I.OBJECTIVES
A. CONTENT STANDARD: The learners demonstrate an
understanding of the subsystems (geosphere,
hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere) that make
up the Earth.
B. PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learners shall be able to conduct a survey to
assess the possible geologic hazards that your
community may experience.
C. LEARNING COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES:
Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems, across
whose boundaries matter and energy flow. (S11/12ES-Ia-e-4)
D. SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES - THE LEARNERS
SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. Describe the characteristics of each subsystem
2. Realize that the subsystems are interconnected
3. Construct a model of the Earth’s subsystems using
recyclable materials
SUBJECT INTEGRATION
Contemporary Arts from the Regions - applies artistic skills
and techniques in the process of creation.
Reading and Writing - Evaluate a written text based on its
properties
Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics - examine human
responses to emerging challenges in contemporary societies
II. CONTENT – EARTH AND
EARTH SYSTEMS

IV. PROCEDURES
Application of 5 E-Learning Model
A. ENGAGE
Activity
Read and Write!
Strategy: Listing Items from a Text
Read the statement below and fill in the table with the needed answers.
Imagine walking along a rocky coast as a storm blows in from the sea. The wind
whips the ocean into whitecaps, and waves crash onto the shore. Before you
have time to escape, blowing spray has scrambled over the rocks to your car.
During the adventure, you have observed the spheres of the Earth.
List down the terms that are used in the statement that reflects to what made up
the Earth. Categorize them based on the following:
Air Water Land With Life
B. EXPLORE
 Activity 2: Your Face Looks Familiar
 Materials:
 Any clean recyclable materials
 Coloring materials/art materials
 Adhesives
 Procedures:
1. Using the recyclable materials, conceptualize your own model of the Earth’s
subsystem
2. Construct your earth’s subsystem model. Make sure the difference between
each sphere will be clear in your own model.
3. Present your model in the class
C. EXPLAIN
 System – A set of interconnected components that are interacting to form
a unified whole
 Earth’s Systems
1. Biosphere – includes all life forms on Earth
2. Hydrosphere – Dynamic mass of water that is continuously on the move
3. Atmosphere – is the thin gaseous layer that envelopes the lithosphere
4. Geosphere – extends from the surface to core
ELABORATE
Activity 3: My Environmental ‘To Do List”
Strategy: Tabulation
The human population has increased rapidly since the 1700s. For most of
human history, there were fewer than a billion people on Earth. In mid-
2009, 6.7 billion people inhabited our planet. Because of this, extensive
pollution is everywhere. As a student, what can you do to save not only a
particular system but the Earth itself?
Tabulate your answer on a separate sheet of paper. Copy the template
below
My Environmental To-Do List
E. EVALUATE
Plickers Quiz
1. Earth includes beach grasses, forms of
life in the sea, on land, and even in the
air. Which term best describes the
statement?
A. atmosphere B. biosphere
C. geosphere D. hydrosphere
2. What is an example of a connection
between atmosphere and the geosphere?
A. water
B. nitrogen
C. mountains
D. volcanic eruption releases gas
3. Which among the choices is an example of a
connection between the atmosphere and the
hydrosphere?
A. lakes B. rain
C. rivers D. rock
4. From the given choices, which is an example
of a connection between the biosphere
connecting to atmosphere?
A. Animals eat plants.
B. Animals drink water.
C. Animals lie in caves.
D. Plants produce oxygen.
5. Among the choices, which clearly gives an
example of the connection between
hydrosphere and geosphere?
A. boats transporting goods
B. fish swimming in water
C. water evaporating to make clouds
D. waves eroding rocks on the beach
REMARKS:
Earth and Life Science is taken by learners four
times a week with one hour (1) per meeting.
