The electric kettle was invented in 1891 but had design flaws, as the heating element was separate from the water. The modern electric kettle design places the heating element inside the water, improving efficiency. An electric kettle works by passing electricity through a high resistance heating element, generating heat to boil the water. For safety, a bi-metallic strip automatically shuts off the kettle once it reaches boiling point to prevent overheating. Arthur Leslie Large is credited with inventing the improved electric kettle design still used today.
