Andrew Hobbs has interests in photography, graphic design, and print work. His photography focuses on landscapes, particularly the Teton mountain range. He has also done logo designs, including ones for "Swimming-Chicken" and "Mountain-Knot". His print work includes posters for a museum and an acrobatics group. He enjoys book design and layout, creating a booklet on architect Frank Gehry that uses typography and layout to set a modern rhythm through the pages.

3. PHOTOGRAPHY Photography is something that I have been interested in for some time. It all started with my love for the Teton mountain range. I saw those eruptions of granite and wanted to capture them in an image or design. I have since picked up photography as more of a hobby, something to use as a get away. I love the outdoors and most of my photography depicts my love for the area I live in. With more time and practice I hope to move into other forms of photography; styles that would incorporate portraits and promotions.

4. The Wind Caves in the Teton valley are a destination spot for many people along the Idaho-Wyoming border. The greens and oranges of the runoff’s banks compliment the rushing water that spits out of the ominous opening of the caves just before the water begins its free fall off the cliffs edge.

5. JUNEAU, AK

6. Island Park, Idaho sits along the Snake River in the middle of a dormant volcanic caldera. Its gorgeous vistas and excellent fly-fishing attract tourist and locals alike. They may come for the relaxing times, but it is the adrenaline rushes that keep them coming back. The powder fields offer snowmobiles miles of entertainment.

9. LOGOS This logo project required that I combine two words, a noun and a verb, to create an image. These two logos I feel represented the concept best. The first: Swimming-Chicken has more of a light-hearted feel and is fun. The second: Mountain-Knot, has a real modern feel to it, along with its rugged mountain range in the middle of the knot it is placed vertically to show an upward climb.

10. PRINT These three print designs are poster assignments meant for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; they are promoting the artist, A.M. Cassandre. The first is my rendition of a modern piece that to attract a general audience. The second is a poster following the design principle of alignment, while the third is an interpretation of something Cassandre would do.

11. PRINT These print posters are promotions for the Golden Dragon Acrobats of China, who are visiting Brigham Young University-Idaho to perform Cirque D’or. They are a highflying performance group of daring skill and elegant dance. They dazzle with their culture and bright colors, I feel they are represented well.

12. PRINT While learning the principles of design and color, I really found that I enjoy grid layouts and typography. This piece is a ode to Adrian Frutiger and his influence on design and typography.

13. STATIONARY Google is one of the most successful companies on the planet. It has influenced the world in so many ways that it has earned its way into the English language. The verb, to google, means to search the web using the powerful search engine. I tried to show through a typograhm that it is an source of infinite information.

14. STATIONARY BUSINESS CARD After creating a visual depiction of Google I rebranded it as an archeology firm. This was considerably difficult to do, as the entire world knows Google as a computer and Internet search engine. After changing the logo from a single word of multiple colors, I added varieties of artifacts throughout the stationary to show the concept of archeology. On the business care, envelope and letterhead there can be found watermarks of words and infinity signs. The Logo itself bleeds off the page pushing the idea of future discovery. The business card has all the needed info in white while additional things are in lighter red. This was fun and if Google wants it they can have it.

16. BOOK DESIGN & LAYOUT Magazine spreads are one of my favorite print designs. I love to set type and show a concept through typography. The mixture of images, type, and negative space are important, but I would argue most importantly are their relationships while contained within a grid on the spread. This booklet featuring information and the works of architect Frank Gehry follow the concept of “modern rhythm.” From the front cover to the back the grid of this piece direct the eye from one flowing title to the next image creating a very real sense of visual pace.
