Driving Innovations @ India
India has great advantage in the low cost of research scientists and engineers. This has been recognised
& taken advantage by global corporations who are continuously increasing investment in in-house or
outsourced R&D in India.
According to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation, their procurement of R&D and engineering services
is about $18 billion - and this far exceeds the aggregate R&D spending of Indian corporations. This
involves not just US and European firms but also Chinese MNCs like Huawei and Xiaomi who are
setting up large R&D facilities employing thousands.
More than half of the private R&D expenditure in India is just in three sectors - pharmaceuticals,
transportation and infotech.
India accounts less than 3 % of US$ 1.6 trillion of global
gross expenditure on Research and Development (GERD)
in PPP (purchasing power parity), which is around five
times lower than that of its neighbor China, as per the
Economic Survey of 2014.
Though India is placed behind USA, China and Japan at
3rd
or 4th
place globally based on GDP, R&D spends is
meager US$ 36.1 Billion against which US spends US$
405 Billions, China spends US$ 337 Billions and Japan
spends US$ 160 Billions.
Just 3 Indian companies found place in Forbes' annual list
of The World's Most Innovative 100 Companies, at 41st
is
Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consultancy Services is at the 64th
spot and ranked at 71st
is Sun Pharma.
How can we prepare Indian corporations into taking a long view?
This requires two key changes in our business environment. First we need an ecosystem that brings
together research, finance and entrepreneurship as the driving force for corporate growth. We are
getting towards this for start-ups; now we need to push it for established corporations also. Second,
those in control of management must always live in fear of a hostile takeover if they are not using
company assets effectively to deliver growth. This is not the case at present, when our takeover codes
favour incumbent managements. In many promoter-managed corporations promoter control has
increased with corporate funds being used for share buy-backs rather than for growth.
The failure to take a long view is particularly evident in the low commitment to research and
development in our corporate sector. Over the past year we have heard a lot about policy reforms to
improve the ease of doing business in India. But we also need reforms that encourage corporations to
take a long view of how business should be done in India.

As market pressures mount, researchers face a need to balance downstream investments with short-
term results. Thirty years ago, Hewlett-Packard Co. introduced a digital wrist watch that incorporated
such features as a calculator, a stopwatch, a 200-year calendar and even a function that added up the
cost of long-distance phone calls. With so many features, how could it fail? If one product bombed,
there were plenty more in the pipeline that would eventually pay the damages - as long as the new
products were even faster or more powerful.
Today's intensely competitive business climate demands not more clever products but creative, cost
effective solutions to specific customer problems. At more and more companies, it also means getting
a better handle on R&D, the mysterious but critical front end of the product development process that
generally determines the marketing success of the final product. Until recently, most companies
regarded R&D as a mystical chain of events, fired by sudden flashes of inspiration, and not as a clearly
defined link in the product development cycle.
The dynamic company with broader outlook will create a Culture of Excellence
 Innovation can occur only when each vertical, department and individual are clear about the
standards of the organization.
 The company should expect only the best standards and goals must be quantifiable and be
communicated clearly to individuals.
 Once people know that mediocrity is unacceptable in the organization, they will find new
ways and means of doing things more effectively.
 Be Tolerant of Failure. There is a fine line between innovating and being wasteful. One needs
to foster tolerance for failure, or else people will be afraid to experiment.
 Companies need to discourage wastage but be tolerant if a new idea or experiment fails.
 Companies need to inculcate values in their employees, not a set of rules to adhere to.
ePanorama

Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 .
ePanorama-61 Page 6 of 15
 Managers need to develop in their workers a particular sensibility and value judgement
capability so that they can make decisions on their own, while adhering to the overall value
system of the organisation.
 Involve More Teams Involve everyone from sales, marketing, product and user experience
design teams to participate in the innovation ideation sessions as it is not an engineering-only
effort. Participation from all the departments yields better results as they bring different
perspectives to the table, with greater focus on customer value.
 Brainstorming sessions bring a lot of energy and creativity to the table and help us build on
each other’s idea.
 Clearly define product goals from the outset and ensures those goals are tied to its core
technologies.
 Works to develop a climate that encourages innovation and risk taking while keeping
researchers focused on the market.
All researchers want to see their ideas are implemented. By teaming them up with other professionals,
they do whatever is necessary to advance the technology. It also tends to avoid the endless tinkering
that often delays Market development and commercialization.
The fault lies much more in corporate board rooms than in our research labs. If Indian corporations
took a long view, they would have used Indian pool of scientific and engineering talent to prepare for
the day when they would have to move beyond imports of recently obsolete technology, reverse
engineering and cost-cutting. Path breaking innovations have generally come from corporate R&D
spending, either in in-house establishments or through sponsored research elsewhere.

The Methods for Superhuman Productivity
By Robin Sharma, #1 bestselling author of The Leader Who Had No Title
We live in The Age of Dramatic Distraction. Many shiny toys to chase every waking moment yet so few of
those pursuits create real value and grow a life brilliantly lived.
Too many of us are overscheduled, over connected and over stimulated by all the noise, interruptions and
complexity of current society.
The cost of this way of operating? You’ll arrive at the last hour of your final day and realize you spent your
highest potential on your lowest leverage activities.
Epic performers, A-Players and World-Builders play a very different game. The Elon Musks, The Mark
Zuckerbergs, great artists and top scientists all run their days under completely different mindsets and rituals
than those who get trapped in the groove of “being busy being busy.”
As a private coach to many of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet and founder of The Titan Summit,
which brings together ultra-performers from 43+ nations for 4 days of elite training on productivity, business
acceleration and lifestyle optimization every December in Toronto, I’ve observed firsthand how human beings
who get more done in a week than most get done in a quarter realize their results. I’ve also developed a
complete methodology for exponential productivity that I teach participants at this event.
Here are 4 of the game-changing elements of my approach:
#1. The 20/20/20 Formula.
The way you start your day powerfully shapes how productively you live it. Reserve the first 60 minutes for
personal preparation. As the Spartan warriors said: “Sweat more in training and you’ll bleed less in war.” Spend
your first 20 minutes in intense exercise. Sweating releases BDNF, a brain chemical that actually grows neural
connections. Working out also releases dopamine (the neurotransmitter of motivation) and serotonin, which
makes you feel happy.
For the next “20 minute pocket”, review your annual plan and reflect deeply on your quarterly goals. Clarity
precedes mastery and this practice will deepen your focus through the day.
Invest the final 20 minutes of this morning routine on learning (i.e., read autobiographies of great humans or
listen to a leadership podcast or download the lessons of yesterday into your journal).
#2. The 90/90/1 Rule.
This habit alone has delivered vast value for my clients. Simply stated: for the next 90 days, dedicate the first 90
minutes of your work day to your single most important opportunity, the one thing that if you executed on it
flawlessly, would cause everything to rise.
ePanorama

Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 .
ePanorama-61 Page 8 of 15
Average performers get to work and check their email or surf the net. For the true leader, reaching the office is
the start of showtime. They understand that developing a monomaniacal focus on their vital few priorities
unleashes legendary results.
#3. The 60/10 Method.
Good research confirms that what makes the best athletes the best in the world is not what they do in their sport
but how effectively they recover. For example, it was the rituals that star tennis players did in between points
that made them stars. What made the Russian weightlifters so undefeatable was their “work-rest ratios”.
So, set a timer for 60 minutes and during those intervals, turn off your technology, shut your door and dive—
with massive intensity—into the project that matters. Then, recover with a pristine break like walking, listening
to music or reading. Just try this protocol for a month and witness the gains.
#4. Find Your Circle of Genius.
Behavioral scientists have discovered the phenomenon of “emotional contagion.” This describes the fact that,
unconsciously, we adopt the beliefs, feelings and behaviors of the people we spend most of our time with.
Want to get ultra-fit? One of the finest ways is to join a running group or make friends with athletes. Ready to
be happier? Then remove the energy vampires and complainers from your life. Set to build a truly world-class
company? Then start spending far more time with those who have been there and done it. Their mindsets and
ways of being will automatically influence you, over time. And associating with people whose lives you want to
be living shows you what’s possible. And once you know more, you can achieve more.
Finally, please allow me to remind you about the shortness of life. Even the longest one is a relatively short ride.
You owe it to the talent you were born into, the team you lead, the family you love and the world that longs for
you to display your greatness to do whatever it takes to reach exponential productivity.
Hopefully, you’ll embrace the methodology I’ve shared to fulfill your leadership potential.
As always, I hope this message has delivered real value to you and sets you up to finish what remains of this
year “in the rare air of outright mastery.”

The Secret to Brain Power
You might experience it in waves or spurts, but we’ve all had those days where it simply feels like our brains
have decided to go on holiday. There are usually a few telltale culprits to blame and it helps to know what they
are and what we can do to prevent them. And then there are additional tips and activities that you can put to
practice to make your brain function as optimally as possible – at all times.
Arouse your mind
Hit the brain gym for a round of mentally stimulating exercises. Now, doing mental exercises might seem
obvious, but it’s important to set aside time for thought-provoking activities. And with our smartphones,
building muscle is easier than ever. Apps and online resources such as BrainHQ and Luminosity offer fun
challenges to help improve memory, speed and attention. These resources are based on the idea of
neuroplasticity, which refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt. Just 15 minutes a day can help boost
your neurological health. And if you want to put the smartphone down for a few minutes, a crossword puzzle
is tried and true way to boost your cognitive abilities.
Exercise your body
In addition to exercising your brain, physical activity is critical in keeping a sharp mind. So, amid your busy
day, find time to squeeze in a workout. You could start your day with simple stretching, take a 30-minute walk
during lunch, or head to the fitness center for a high-impact workout when the day is done. These kinds of
activities give you physical and neurological benefits and it’s a chance to use your mind to pay attention to the
movements of your body and the surrounding environment. So, when you’re working out, put your senses to
work, too, and experience every move, sound and touch. If you’re not engaging your mind during physical
activity, it’s a lost opportunity for improvement.
Learn new skills
Have you always wanted to play a musical instrument? Paint? Speak a foreign language? Become a ping pong
champion? Now you’ve got an added reason to pick up a six-string or brush. By learning new skills, you’re
continuously challenging yourself, and that means you’re giving yourself ample opportunity to stretch your
cognitive capacity. Some activities, such as ping pong, test and improve your reactions. Others, such as
puzzles or pottery, demand and boost adaptive memory and working memory skills. Similarly to physical
workouts, take each activity seriously by engaging your senses and paying attention to everything that you’re
doing.
Get social
Social interaction – the real kind, not the Facebook kind – is brain food for everyone. Just as a young child
needs human contact to develop his or her mind, adults need interaction to continually develop cognitive

ePanorama-61 Page 10 of 15
sharpness. It can be as simple and fun as a party with close friends, or a professional seminar discussing topics
related to your job. Either way, the brain is being stimulated, which allows its power and abilities to grow.
Focus on one task
While multi-tasking is a daily demand in today’s world, this activity of dividing our attention might actually
be more problematic than productive. When you multi-task, you’re not able to fully get “in the zone” and
focus on completing that task to the best of your ability. Multi-tasking, in fact, can also lead to more mistakes.
Instead, focus on one task at a time, so your brain and all your senses can become fully engaged. Here’s one
simple way to look at it: if you’re trying to read a book and watch a TV show at the same time, you’re going to
miss details of one or probably both. By focusing on one task, you’re able to complete it more competently,
while also boosting your memory.
Eat smart
You already know that eating healthy is good for your physical health, but it can do wonders for your mental
health, too. Your brain needs nutrients and energy just like your body does, so stock up on foods such as
whole grains, nuts, berries, green vegetables and fish, which is especially rich in the powerful omega-3 fatty
acids. A diet that consists of healthy “brain foods”, along with physical exercise, plays a vital role in shaping
and maintaining one’s cognitive capacity, including concentration and working memory. In short, smart food
equals energy for your brain.
Live smart, stay sharp
Training isn’t just for physical muscles. The more you stimulate your brain, the stronger it will perform on a
daily basis. Smartphones and new technologies provide fun and innovative ways to boost cognitive capacity,
while social interaction and hands-on activities are just as vital. With a strong mind, you can help avoid those
occasional mental lapses, learn new skills much faster and help protect yourself against the effects of old age.

Challenges before Indian Industry
against the backdrop of ‘Make-In-India’ campaign.
- Dr. M. S. Patel
In September last year, government launched the ‘Make-In-India’ campaign revealing the intention to
strengthen domestic manufacturing base. Prosperity of any nation, whether in terms of GDP growth or
expressed simply as per capita income, is directly proportional to a nation’s skill to convert available
raw materials into marketable finished goods with high efficiency. For this, it requires a strong
manufacturing base with peripheral support of basic utilities, energy, skilled manpower,
infrastructure, and so on. So the campaign as such is a welcome step, but government’s capacity and
boldness to translate this into ground realities with reference to bureaucratic policies will decide its
fate over a time to come. Some indications are already available on its dedicated
website:http://www.makeinindia.com/
DebashisBasu, in his article: ‘Make in India - beyond the slogan', describes three major fronts needing
urgent attention - Human resource, Real Estate and Capital. The fourth one he forgets to mention, even
more important than these three, is uninterrupted supply of energy. This of course opens up a vast
area of unlimited opportunities, as we shall see later on. [http://www.business-
standard.com/article/opinion/debashis-basu-make-in-india-beyond-the-slogan-114121400577_1.html].
Shared here are a few thoughts with intention to indicate some bright opportunities disguised under
formidable challenges. My purpose will be served even if only a thought process is invoked in some
young entrepreneurs, sawing seeds for a new venture into entirely a non-traditional direction.
Keeping Customer in Focus:
After successful commercialization and widespread popularity of Edison’s lamp, electric lighting
became so cheap, it was said then that only a fool or an extravagant rich could afford to burn candles
for lighting. But at the beginning of his career, the same genius inventor, had suffered an unexpected
failure of his automatic vote-tally system (a kind of EVM, Electronic Voting Machine of those days),
forcing him to take a tough decision, as Nathan Furr writes in Forbes magazine: “Edison reframed all
his future efforts with one simple phrase, ‘I never want to build something that nobody wants to buy’ ”.
Rather than letting the failure destroy him, Edison recovered and discovered two very important
principles that made him one of the most famous serial innovators of all time. Both these principles
focus on “..... What Customers Will Buy” [Read more of this interesting article:
innovate/]
So, customer is the clue and market is the driving force for any industry. First question to be answered
here is why a customer should buy my product, when he has other multiple choices from domestic as
well as international suppliers? Consistent quality, reliability, cost-effectiveness and unbroken supply
chain are but a few of the factors that play a major role in deciding the customer base. Necessity is the
mother of invention. To maintain the competitive edge and to continually enhance customer
satisfaction, one has to resort to a strong R&D base. It is the realm of research and innovation that
provides tailor-made solutions specific to each individual need of the product portfolio.

ePanorama-61 Page 12 of 15
Fortunately for India, what was considered a big challenge once upon a time, and now slowly turning
into a boon in disguise- the ‘population explosion’, provides us with a rapidly expanding captive
consumer base - the younger generation of a widely varied age groups and diversified social strata.
Study their lifestyle, growing requirements, hobbies and spending habits; and get access to whole new
market avenues.
Overcoming the Mindset:
Whether it is government, manufacturer or a customer, one of the greatest obstacles on the path of
innovation and non-conventional enterprise is mindset. So this is the first and foremost factor to
overcome. How creatively we view a challenge and how effectively we convert it into opportunity
makes all the difference. It is said, ‘Attitude is everything’. Outcome of any pursuit depends a lot more
on how you look at it. Konosuke Matshusita (Creator of National and Panasonic brands) writes: When
you change your point to view, your results change too.
I still remember the remarks made by a veteran industrialist, who turned a staunch naturalist and a
very good social reformer in his later life. Few years back, while delivering a talk before BDMA
members in GNFC auditorium at Bharuch, he said: “Never see carbon dioxide as a pollutant, it is a
valuable raw material. Put all your efforts only to convert it into a value-added product. And even if
you do not want to do anything yourself, just plant a tree, and let the soil and the sunlight do rest of the
work”. These golden words are from Mr. Kantisen C. Shroff, an entrepreneur who set up Excel
Industries from scratch.
Let us now examine some opportunities emanating from his suggestion.
One is the development of a commercially viable technology for carbon dioxide capture and its storage
for ultimate value added use. Please see this review article:
[http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364032114005450], there exists a scope.
Another opportunity, for India being at a geographical advantage, is agro forestry for fuel-wood. I
remember to have read, many years back, a small article in Gujarati magazine ‘Navneet-Samarpan’,
about one gentleman near Valsad, who brought the cultivation of Calliandra tree
(Calliandracalothyrsus) to India and also freely distributed its seeds to interested farmers. This is a
versatile, fast growing tree offering cheap and ideal firewood.
[http://www.fao.org/ag/agp/agpc/doc/publicat/gutt-shel/x5556e09.htm]. Cultivation of
Calliandra coupled with wood gasification is a promising source of good quality fuel gas.
There is no shortage of successful designs for wood gasifiers. Wood Gasification is a very clean way to
make biogas in mere minutes. In fact the wood is just a storage battery for solar energy. Wood gases a
perfect complement to solar thermal and solar electric power because you can tap into the energy day
or night and even during the winter [ http://www.woodgasifierplans.com/faq/ ]. Please see the readily
available literature on this subject: (a) http://www.miniwoodgas.com/wood%20gasification.pdf ], (b)
Wood gasification: A presentation by Renewable Energy Training Cenre of Morrisville State
University, [ http://retc.morrisville.edu/resources.aspx , http://people.morrisville.edu/~hofmeypv/ ]
Photosynthesis, carried out by green vegetation without any noise or propaganda is by far the most
efficient and the greenest method of converting solar energy, and sequestrating carbon dioxide. Solar
heaters and photovoltaics come next, as they have some indirect carbon footprints.

ePanorama-61 Page 13 of 15
No need to limit the cultivation to Calliandra only, our country has so many other varieties of such
trees qualifying for fuel wood. It is a question of exploring and exploiting.
This leads to a very basic fact that agricultural land, plenty of sunlight and sufficient river water are
the three most fundamental natural resources that any country can dream about. The underground
stock of precious minerals including coal and oil is an added advantage. And India is blessed with this
raw wealth - rich untapped resources waiting to be harnessed for a better tomorrow. Are we utilizing
our fortunes in the most profitable way? Or India is yet a ‘Poor Rich country, as Mr. P. Chidambaram
talked at the ‘Second annual Harish C. Mahindra Endowed Lecture ‘at the Harvard Business School in
Massachusetts, USA, 2007. [http://www.mahindra.com/news-room/press-release/1294210847 ] He said:
“....... India is rich because of its natural resources; it is poor because it is unable to exploit those
resources efficiently and profitably........ “. Let us change this as soon as possible.
Small is Beautiful:
To be successful, is it necessary to start with a multi mega scale enterprise? Not so, always. Economy
of scale does play a role and one has to think about global markets and giant capacities for most of the
bulk chemicals, but this should not deter or daunt an innovative entrepreneur who has a non-
conventional idea. Speciality chemicals catering to very specific needs can be produced with small
scale start up, which can expand later on in line with increasing demand. Think about a small
electrochemical cell for production of hydrogen peroxide:
http://www.electrochemsci.org/papers/vol8/80303084.pdf . Electro-organic synthesis is a branch still
having potential to provide novel routes for making important chemicals.
The menace of plastic carry bags has engulfed almost entire nation. These shopping bags usually end
up as trash bags for disposing garbage and kitchen waste, eaten by road side domestic animals - mostly
cows and buffaloes. This plastic accumulates in their system leading to fatality. Other environmental
impacts are also reported. [http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/14901/1/ The-Effects-of-Plastic-Bags-
on-Environment.html ] A biodegradable paper-pulp based packing material is highly needed which
can be easily digested by animals. Service agencies engaged in handling and recycling of segregated
materials like plastic, metal, glass etc. have good scope. Fortunately some work has already started in
this direction. [ http://www.dimensiontoday.com/latest-technology-news-updates/fighting-the-plastic-
bag-menace-a-story-of-courage-and-action-09619.html ]
Core Competency:
Our IT and Pharma sectors have a good potential; at least pharma companies have shown signs of
becoming global leaders. The knowledge bank in the field of synthetic organic chemistry has paid rich
dividends in the area of healthcare. Combined with our ancient methods of Ayurveda and herbal
remedies, this avenue further offers a new set of opportunities.
Export of Finished Goods Vs. Raw Materials:
India is the largest producer and exporter of castor oil, a versatile raw material and precursor of
sebacic acid which is used globally as a natural ingredient in cosmetics. Expanding cultivation of
castor and promoting domestic processing of castor oil for making its derivatives can generate better
revenues compared to export of raw oil. Diversified applications of this material are well-known, and
what is mentioned here is an example only.

Skilled Manpower:
All that degree holder stuff produced in money-minting self-finance institutes is not worthy of
industrial deployment. Much of on-the-job training is needed to be given before it can be put to any
useful task. This also poses a challenge as well as an opportunity for Industrial Training Institutes.
Still greater challenge may be to find suitable employment for them even after acquiring skills,
because more and more automation and robotics will be replacing human labor wherever it will be
possible.
Setting Priorities:
Aiming high and neglecting basic needs, is mismanagement in other words. Government being the
regulatory authority, has to set priorities first, otherwise any campaign can become an empty slogan.
With respect to ‘make in India’ campaign, ‘The Hindu’ wrote about this paradox: “Mastering rocket
science, failing basics-India has mastered atomic, space and missile development, but continues to
import basic defense equipment. ‘Make in India’ needs a course correction within the larger realm of
technology development”. More details can be accessed here: [http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-
ed/prime-minister-narendra-modis-call-for-make-in-india-mastering-rocket-science-failing-
basics/article7400004.ece]
Ray of Hope:
We began this topic referring to Nathan Furr in Forbes magazine on Edison. Let me conclude also,
with the same writer’s last note in the same article “Innovators Change the World—Keep Changing It”,
- he writes further, “As a final note, let me raise my glass to all of you who innovate—as entrepreneurs,
as managers, as individuals, as families, or whoever you are. Innovators change the world, in small
ways and big ways. I love to see you do it and if I can help, great. If I just get to see you do it and be
inspired, wonderful. Whether you find a better way to improve your life or a way to improve the lives
of many, keep trying. You will change your life and mine for the better. I can’t wait to see it. If you
don’t think you are an entrepreneur or an innovator, I’ll put my money down that you are and can be.”
So, have faith in yourself and go ahead, make something, you can win.

********************************************************************************************
Life cannot be classified in terms of a simple neurological ladder,
with human beings at the top; it is more accurate to talk of different forms of
intelligence, each with its strengths and weaknesses.
This point was well demonstrated in the minutes before Tsunami, when tourists grabbed
their digital cameras and ran after the ebbing surf,
and all the 'dumb' animals made for the hills.

  • 4. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 4 of 15 Driving Innovations @ India India has great advantage in the low cost of research scientists and engineers. This has been recognised & taken advantage by global corporations who are continuously increasing investment in in-house or outsourced R&D in India. According to the Indian Brand Equity Foundation, their procurement of R&D and engineering services is about $18 billion - and this far exceeds the aggregate R&D spending of Indian corporations. This involves not just US and European firms but also Chinese MNCs like Huawei and Xiaomi who are setting up large R&D facilities employing thousands. More than half of the private R&D expenditure in India is just in three sectors - pharmaceuticals, transportation and infotech. India accounts less than 3 % of US$ 1.6 trillion of global gross expenditure on Research and Development (GERD) in PPP (purchasing power parity), which is around five times lower than that of its neighbor China, as per the Economic Survey of 2014. Though India is placed behind USA, China and Japan at 3rd or 4th place globally based on GDP, R&D spends is meager US$ 36.1 Billion against which US spends US$ 405 Billions, China spends US$ 337 Billions and Japan spends US$ 160 Billions. Just 3 Indian companies found place in Forbes' annual list of The World's Most Innovative 100 Companies, at 41st is Hindustan Unilever, Tata Consultancy Services is at the 64th spot and ranked at 71st is Sun Pharma. How can we prepare Indian corporations into taking a long view? This requires two key changes in our business environment. First we need an ecosystem that brings together research, finance and entrepreneurship as the driving force for corporate growth. We are getting towards this for start-ups; now we need to push it for established corporations also. Second, those in control of management must always live in fear of a hostile takeover if they are not using company assets effectively to deliver growth. This is not the case at present, when our takeover codes favour incumbent managements. In many promoter-managed corporations promoter control has increased with corporate funds being used for share buy-backs rather than for growth. The failure to take a long view is particularly evident in the low commitment to research and development in our corporate sector. Over the past year we have heard a lot about policy reforms to improve the ease of doing business in India. But we also need reforms that encourage corporations to take a long view of how business should be done in India.
  • 5. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 5 of 15 As market pressures mount, researchers face a need to balance downstream investments with short- term results. Thirty years ago, Hewlett-Packard Co. introduced a digital wrist watch that incorporated such features as a calculator, a stopwatch, a 200-year calendar and even a function that added up the cost of long-distance phone calls. With so many features, how could it fail? If one product bombed, there were plenty more in the pipeline that would eventually pay the damages - as long as the new products were even faster or more powerful. Today's intensely competitive business climate demands not more clever products but creative, cost effective solutions to specific customer problems. At more and more companies, it also means getting a better handle on R&D, the mysterious but critical front end of the product development process that generally determines the marketing success of the final product. Until recently, most companies regarded R&D as a mystical chain of events, fired by sudden flashes of inspiration, and not as a clearly defined link in the product development cycle. The dynamic company with broader outlook will create a Culture of Excellence  Innovation can occur only when each vertical, department and individual are clear about the standards of the organization.  The company should expect only the best standards and goals must be quantifiable and be communicated clearly to individuals.  Once people know that mediocrity is unacceptable in the organization, they will find new ways and means of doing things more effectively.  Be Tolerant of Failure. There is a fine line between innovating and being wasteful. One needs to foster tolerance for failure, or else people will be afraid to experiment.  Companies need to discourage wastage but be tolerant if a new idea or experiment fails.  Companies need to inculcate values in their employees, not a set of rules to adhere to.
  • 6. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 6 of 15  Managers need to develop in their workers a particular sensibility and value judgement capability so that they can make decisions on their own, while adhering to the overall value system of the organisation.  Involve More Teams Involve everyone from sales, marketing, product and user experience design teams to participate in the innovation ideation sessions as it is not an engineering-only effort. Participation from all the departments yields better results as they bring different perspectives to the table, with greater focus on customer value.  Brainstorming sessions bring a lot of energy and creativity to the table and help us build on each other’s idea.  Clearly define product goals from the outset and ensures those goals are tied to its core technologies.  Works to develop a climate that encourages innovation and risk taking while keeping researchers focused on the market. All researchers want to see their ideas are implemented. By teaming them up with other professionals, they do whatever is necessary to advance the technology. It also tends to avoid the endless tinkering that often delays Market development and commercialization. The fault lies much more in corporate board rooms than in our research labs. If Indian corporations took a long view, they would have used Indian pool of scientific and engineering talent to prepare for the day when they would have to move beyond imports of recently obsolete technology, reverse engineering and cost-cutting. Path breaking innovations have generally come from corporate R&D spending, either in in-house establishments or through sponsored research elsewhere. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Mr. Jayen P Mehta is Chairman – ePanorama Editorial, Executive Member - IIChE-ARC and Chief Manager (R&D) – GNFC Ltd. • 7. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 7 of 15 The Methods for Superhuman Productivity By Robin Sharma, #1 bestselling author of The Leader Who Had No Title We live in The Age of Dramatic Distraction. Many shiny toys to chase every waking moment yet so few of those pursuits create real value and grow a life brilliantly lived. Too many of us are overscheduled, over connected and over stimulated by all the noise, interruptions and complexity of current society. The cost of this way of operating? You’ll arrive at the last hour of your final day and realize you spent your highest potential on your lowest leverage activities. Epic performers, A-Players and World-Builders play a very different game. The Elon Musks, The Mark Zuckerbergs, great artists and top scientists all run their days under completely different mindsets and rituals than those who get trapped in the groove of “being busy being busy.” As a private coach to many of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet and founder of The Titan Summit, which brings together ultra-performers from 43+ nations for 4 days of elite training on productivity, business acceleration and lifestyle optimization every December in Toronto, I’ve observed firsthand how human beings who get more done in a week than most get done in a quarter realize their results. I’ve also developed a complete methodology for exponential productivity that I teach participants at this event. Here are 4 of the game-changing elements of my approach: #1. The 20/20/20 Formula. The way you start your day powerfully shapes how productively you live it. Reserve the first 60 minutes for personal preparation. As the Spartan warriors said: “Sweat more in training and you’ll bleed less in war.” Spend your first 20 minutes in intense exercise. Sweating releases BDNF, a brain chemical that actually grows neural connections. Working out also releases dopamine (the neurotransmitter of motivation) and serotonin, which makes you feel happy. For the next “20 minute pocket”, review your annual plan and reflect deeply on your quarterly goals. Clarity precedes mastery and this practice will deepen your focus through the day. Invest the final 20 minutes of this morning routine on learning (i.e., read autobiographies of great humans or listen to a leadership podcast or download the lessons of yesterday into your journal). #2. The 90/90/1 Rule. This habit alone has delivered vast value for my clients. Simply stated: for the next 90 days, dedicate the first 90 minutes of your work day to your single most important opportunity, the one thing that if you executed on it flawlessly, would cause everything to rise.
  • 8. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 8 of 15 Average performers get to work and check their email or surf the net. For the true leader, reaching the office is the start of showtime. They understand that developing a monomaniacal focus on their vital few priorities unleashes legendary results. #3. The 60/10 Method. Good research confirms that what makes the best athletes the best in the world is not what they do in their sport but how effectively they recover. For example, it was the rituals that star tennis players did in between points that made them stars. What made the Russian weightlifters so undefeatable was their “work-rest ratios”. So, set a timer for 60 minutes and during those intervals, turn off your technology, shut your door and dive— with massive intensity—into the project that matters. Then, recover with a pristine break like walking, listening to music or reading. Just try this protocol for a month and witness the gains. #4. Find Your Circle of Genius. Behavioral scientists have discovered the phenomenon of “emotional contagion.” This describes the fact that, unconsciously, we adopt the beliefs, feelings and behaviors of the people we spend most of our time with. Want to get ultra-fit? One of the finest ways is to join a running group or make friends with athletes. Ready to be happier? Then remove the energy vampires and complainers from your life. Set to build a truly world-class company? Then start spending far more time with those who have been there and done it. Their mindsets and ways of being will automatically influence you, over time. And associating with people whose lives you want to be living shows you what’s possible. And once you know more, you can achieve more. Finally, please allow me to remind you about the shortness of life. Even the longest one is a relatively short ride. You owe it to the talent you were born into, the team you lead, the family you love and the world that longs for you to display your greatness to do whatever it takes to reach exponential productivity. Hopefully, you’ll embrace the methodology I’ve shared to fulfill your leadership potential. As always, I hope this message has delivered real value to you and sets you up to finish what remains of this year “in the rare air of outright mastery.” ***************************************** In a consumer society there are inevitably two kinds of slaves: the prisoners of addiction and the prisoners of envy. Ivan Illich, philosopher
  • 9. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 9 of 15 The Secret to Brain Power You might experience it in waves or spurts, but we’ve all had those days where it simply feels like our brains have decided to go on holiday. There are usually a few telltale culprits to blame and it helps to know what they are and what we can do to prevent them. And then there are additional tips and activities that you can put to practice to make your brain function as optimally as possible – at all times. Arouse your mind Hit the brain gym for a round of mentally stimulating exercises. Now, doing mental exercises might seem obvious, but it’s important to set aside time for thought-provoking activities. And with our smartphones, building muscle is easier than ever. Apps and online resources such as BrainHQ and Luminosity offer fun challenges to help improve memory, speed and attention. These resources are based on the idea of neuroplasticity, which refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt. Just 15 minutes a day can help boost your neurological health. And if you want to put the smartphone down for a few minutes, a crossword puzzle is tried and true way to boost your cognitive abilities. Exercise your body In addition to exercising your brain, physical activity is critical in keeping a sharp mind. So, amid your busy day, find time to squeeze in a workout. You could start your day with simple stretching, take a 30-minute walk during lunch, or head to the fitness center for a high-impact workout when the day is done. These kinds of activities give you physical and neurological benefits and it’s a chance to use your mind to pay attention to the movements of your body and the surrounding environment. So, when you’re working out, put your senses to work, too, and experience every move, sound and touch. If you’re not engaging your mind during physical activity, it’s a lost opportunity for improvement. Learn new skills Have you always wanted to play a musical instrument? Paint? Speak a foreign language? Become a ping pong champion? Now you’ve got an added reason to pick up a six-string or brush. By learning new skills, you’re continuously challenging yourself, and that means you’re giving yourself ample opportunity to stretch your cognitive capacity. Some activities, such as ping pong, test and improve your reactions. Others, such as puzzles or pottery, demand and boost adaptive memory and working memory skills. Similarly to physical workouts, take each activity seriously by engaging your senses and paying attention to everything that you’re doing. Get social Social interaction – the real kind, not the Facebook kind – is brain food for everyone. Just as a young child needs human contact to develop his or her mind, adults need interaction to continually develop cognitive
  • 10. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 10 of 15 sharpness. It can be as simple and fun as a party with close friends, or a professional seminar discussing topics related to your job. Either way, the brain is being stimulated, which allows its power and abilities to grow. Focus on one task While multi-tasking is a daily demand in today’s world, this activity of dividing our attention might actually be more problematic than productive. When you multi-task, you’re not able to fully get “in the zone” and focus on completing that task to the best of your ability. Multi-tasking, in fact, can also lead to more mistakes. Instead, focus on one task at a time, so your brain and all your senses can become fully engaged. Here’s one simple way to look at it: if you’re trying to read a book and watch a TV show at the same time, you’re going to miss details of one or probably both. By focusing on one task, you’re able to complete it more competently, while also boosting your memory. Eat smart You already know that eating healthy is good for your physical health, but it can do wonders for your mental health, too. Your brain needs nutrients and energy just like your body does, so stock up on foods such as whole grains, nuts, berries, green vegetables and fish, which is especially rich in the powerful omega-3 fatty acids. A diet that consists of healthy “brain foods”, along with physical exercise, plays a vital role in shaping and maintaining one’s cognitive capacity, including concentration and working memory. In short, smart food equals energy for your brain. Live smart, stay sharp Training isn’t just for physical muscles. The more you stimulate your brain, the stronger it will perform on a daily basis. Smartphones and new technologies provide fun and innovative ways to boost cognitive capacity, while social interaction and hands-on activities are just as vital. With a strong mind, you can help avoid those occasional mental lapses, learn new skills much faster and help protect yourself against the effects of old age. **************************************** Insanity in individuals is something rare – but in groups, parties, nations, and epochs, it is the rule. -Friedrich Nietzsche, philosopher (1844-1900) ******************************************* In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations. -Iroquois Nation Maxim
  • 11. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 11 of 15 Challenges before Indian Industry against the backdrop of ‘Make-In-India’ campaign. - Dr. M. S. Patel In September last year, government launched the ‘Make-In-India’ campaign revealing the intention to strengthen domestic manufacturing base. Prosperity of any nation, whether in terms of GDP growth or expressed simply as per capita income, is directly proportional to a nation’s skill to convert available raw materials into marketable finished goods with high efficiency. For this, it requires a strong manufacturing base with peripheral support of basic utilities, energy, skilled manpower, infrastructure, and so on. So the campaign as such is a welcome step, but government’s capacity and boldness to translate this into ground realities with reference to bureaucratic policies will decide its fate over a time to come. Some indications are already available on its dedicated website:http://www.makeinindia.com/ DebashisBasu, in his article: ‘Make in India - beyond the slogan', describes three major fronts needing urgent attention - Human resource, Real Estate and Capital. The fourth one he forgets to mention, even more important than these three, is uninterrupted supply of energy. This of course opens up a vast area of unlimited opportunities, as we shall see later on. [http://www.business- standard.com/article/opinion/debashis-basu-make-in-india-beyond-the-slogan-114121400577_1.html]. Shared here are a few thoughts with intention to indicate some bright opportunities disguised under formidable challenges. My purpose will be served even if only a thought process is invoked in some young entrepreneurs, sawing seeds for a new venture into entirely a non-traditional direction. Keeping Customer in Focus: After successful commercialization and widespread popularity of Edison’s lamp, electric lighting became so cheap, it was said then that only a fool or an extravagant rich could afford to burn candles for lighting. But at the beginning of his career, the same genius inventor, had suffered an unexpected failure of his automatic vote-tally system (a kind of EVM, Electronic Voting Machine of those days), forcing him to take a tough decision, as Nathan Furr writes in Forbes magazine: “Edison reframed all his future efforts with one simple phrase, ‘I never want to build something that nobody wants to buy’ ”. Rather than letting the failure destroy him, Edison recovered and discovered two very important principles that made him one of the most famous serial innovators of all time. Both these principles focus on “..... What Customers Will Buy” [Read more of this interesting article: [http://www.forbes.com/sites/nathanfurr/2011/06/09/how-failure-taught-edison-to-repeatedly- innovate/] So, customer is the clue and market is the driving force for any industry. First question to be answered here is why a customer should buy my product, when he has other multiple choices from domestic as well as international suppliers? Consistent quality, reliability, cost-effectiveness and unbroken supply chain are but a few of the factors that play a major role in deciding the customer base. Necessity is the mother of invention. To maintain the competitive edge and to continually enhance customer satisfaction, one has to resort to a strong R&D base. It is the realm of research and innovation that provides tailor-made solutions specific to each individual need of the product portfolio.
  • 12. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 12 of 15 Fortunately for India, what was considered a big challenge once upon a time, and now slowly turning into a boon in disguise- the ‘population explosion’, provides us with a rapidly expanding captive consumer base - the younger generation of a widely varied age groups and diversified social strata. Study their lifestyle, growing requirements, hobbies and spending habits; and get access to whole new market avenues. Overcoming the Mindset: Whether it is government, manufacturer or a customer, one of the greatest obstacles on the path of innovation and non-conventional enterprise is mindset. So this is the first and foremost factor to overcome. How creatively we view a challenge and how effectively we convert it into opportunity makes all the difference. It is said, ‘Attitude is everything’. Outcome of any pursuit depends a lot more on how you look at it. Konosuke Matshusita (Creator of National and Panasonic brands) writes: When you change your point to view, your results change too. I still remember the remarks made by a veteran industrialist, who turned a staunch naturalist and a very good social reformer in his later life. Few years back, while delivering a talk before BDMA members in GNFC auditorium at Bharuch, he said: “Never see carbon dioxide as a pollutant, it is a valuable raw material. Put all your efforts only to convert it into a value-added product. And even if you do not want to do anything yourself, just plant a tree, and let the soil and the sunlight do rest of the work”. These golden words are from Mr. Kantisen C. Shroff, an entrepreneur who set up Excel Industries from scratch. Let us now examine some opportunities emanating from his suggestion. One is the development of a commercially viable technology for carbon dioxide capture and its storage for ultimate value added use. Please see this review article: [http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1364032114005450], there exists a scope. Another opportunity, for India being at a geographical advantage, is agro forestry for fuel-wood. I remember to have read, many years back, a small article in Gujarati magazine ‘Navneet-Samarpan’, about one gentleman near Valsad, who brought the cultivation of Calliandra tree (Calliandracalothyrsus) to India and also freely distributed its seeds to interested farmers. This is a versatile, fast growing tree offering cheap and ideal firewood. [http://www.fao.org/ag/agp/agpc/doc/publicat/gutt-shel/x5556e09.htm]. Cultivation of Calliandra coupled with wood gasification is a promising source of good quality fuel gas. There is no shortage of successful designs for wood gasifiers. Wood Gasification is a very clean way to make biogas in mere minutes. In fact the wood is just a storage battery for solar energy. Wood gases a perfect complement to solar thermal and solar electric power because you can tap into the energy day or night and even during the winter [ http://www.woodgasifierplans.com/faq/ ]. Please see the readily available literature on this subject: (a) http://www.miniwoodgas.com/wood%20gasification.pdf ], (b) Wood gasification: A presentation by Renewable Energy Training Cenre of Morrisville State University, [ http://retc.morrisville.edu/resources.aspx , http://people.morrisville.edu/~hofmeypv/ ] Photosynthesis, carried out by green vegetation without any noise or propaganda is by far the most efficient and the greenest method of converting solar energy, and sequestrating carbon dioxide. Solar heaters and photovoltaics come next, as they have some indirect carbon footprints.
  • 13. ePanorama www.bdma.in Bharuch District Management Association Newsletter Vol. 61 –October’15 . ePanorama-61 Page 13 of 15 No need to limit the cultivation to Calliandra only, our country has so many other varieties of such trees qualifying for fuel wood. It is a question of exploring and exploiting. This leads to a very basic fact that agricultural land, plenty of sunlight and sufficient river water are the three most fundamental natural resources that any country can dream about. The underground stock of precious minerals including coal and oil is an added advantage. And India is blessed with this raw wealth - rich untapped resources waiting to be harnessed for a better tomorrow. Are we utilizing our fortunes in the most profitable way? Or India is yet a ‘Poor Rich country, as Mr. P. Chidambaram talked at the ‘Second annual Harish C. Mahindra Endowed Lecture ‘at the Harvard Business School in Massachusetts, USA, 2007. [http://www.mahindra.com/news-room/press-release/1294210847 ] He said: “....... India is rich because of its natural resources; it is poor because it is unable to exploit those resources efficiently and profitably........ “. Let us change this as soon as possible. Small is Beautiful: To be successful, is it necessary to start with a multi mega scale enterprise? Not so, always. Economy of scale does play a role and one has to think about global markets and giant capacities for most of the bulk chemicals, but this should not deter or daunt an innovative entrepreneur who has a non- conventional idea. Speciality chemicals catering to very specific needs can be produced with small scale start up, which can expand later on in line with increasing demand. Think about a small electrochemical cell for production of hydrogen peroxide: http://www.electrochemsci.org/papers/vol8/80303084.pdf . Electro-organic synthesis is a branch still having potential to provide novel routes for making important chemicals. The menace of plastic carry bags has engulfed almost entire nation. These shopping bags usually end up as trash bags for disposing garbage and kitchen waste, eaten by road side domestic animals - mostly cows and buffaloes. This plastic accumulates in their system leading to fatality. Other environmental impacts are also reported. [http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/14901/1/ The-Effects-of-Plastic-Bags- on-Environment.html ] A biodegradable paper-pulp based packing material is highly needed which can be easily digested by animals. Service agencies engaged in handling and recycling of segregated materials like plastic, metal, glass etc. have good scope. Fortunately some work has already started in this direction. The knowledge bank in the field of synthetic organic chemistry has paid rich dividends in the area of healthcare. Combined with our ancient methods of Ayurveda and herbal remedies, this avenue further offers a new set of opportunities. Export of Finished Goods Vs. Raw Materials: India is the largest producer and exporter of castor oil, a versatile raw material and precursor of sebacic acid which is used globally as a natural ingredient in cosmetics. Expanding cultivation of castor and promoting domestic processing of castor oil for making its derivatives can generate better revenues compared to export of raw oil. Diversified applications of this material are well-known, and what is mentioned here is an example only.

Much of on-the-job training is needed to be given before it can be put to any useful task. This also poses a challenge as well as an opportunity for Industrial Training Institutes. Still greater challenge may be to find suitable employment for them even after acquiring skills, because more and more automation and robotics will be replacing human labor wherever it will be possible. Setting Priorities: Aiming high and neglecting basic needs, is mismanagement in other words. Government being the regulatory authority, has to set priorities first, otherwise any campaign can become an empty slogan. With respect to ‘make in India’ campaign, ‘The Hindu’ wrote about this paradox: “Mastering rocket science, failing basics-India has mastered atomic, space and missile development, but continues to import basic defense equipment. ‘Make in India’ needs a course correction within the larger realm of technology development”. Let me conclude also, with the same writer’s last note in the same article “Innovators Change the World—Keep Changing It”, - he writes further, “As a final note, let me raise my glass to all of you who innovate—as entrepreneurs, as managers, as individuals, as families, or whoever you are. Innovators change the world, in small ways and big ways. I love to see you do it and if I can help, great. If I just get to see you do it and be inspired, wonderful. Whether you find a better way to improve your life or a way to improve the lives of many, keep trying. You will change your life and mine for the better. I can’t wait to see it. If you don’t think you are an entrepreneur or an innovator, I’ll put my money down that you are and can be.” So, have faith in yourself and go ahead, make something, you can win. This point was well demonstrated in the minutes before Tsunami, when tourists grabbed their digital cameras and ran after the ebbing surf, and all the 'dumb' animals made for the hills. B.R.
