Duane Michals is an American photographer known for his innovative use of photo sequences and incorporation of text to examine emotion and philosophy. While initially planning to be a graphic designer, Michals discovered his interest in photography while on holiday in the Soviet Union in 1958. His first exhibition in 1963 launched his career in commercial photography, though he describes himself as an expressionist who conveys himself through various mediums according to his needs.
