1. Adjustment disorders are diagnosed when a person develops emotional or behavioral symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor that causes significant impairment.
2. There are six types of adjustment disorders distinguished by the predominant symptom: depressed mood, anxiety, mixed anxiety and depression, disturbance of conduct, mixed disturbance of emotions and conduct, or unspecified symptoms.
3. Adjustment disorders should be resolved within 6 months of the stressor, though this may be longer for chronic stressors.
