This document describes a study that used a 3D numerical model to simulate net deposition of cohesive sediments in the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) zone of the Weser River estuary in Germany. The model was able to reproduce observed patterns of sediment concentration in the ETM and the approximate volume of sediment deposited annually, which is similar to the volume dredged for navigation. The model results indicate a stable long-term ETM that shifts seasonally depending on river discharge. Future work could improve the model by adding more sediment fractions, incorporating waves, allowing erosion of consolidated bed sediments, and making the model fully morphodynamic.

This document discusses leveraging water hydraulics modelling with telemetry data in Quinta do Lago, Portugal. It notes the uncertainty of water demand patterns there and proposes linking GIS, EPANET, and telemetry databases in a real-time hydraulic model. Simulations show that using estimated demand data leads to different maximum pressure and fluctuation results than using real telemetry data, demonstrating the importance of telemetry data for planning, asset management, and detailed analysis. The model with estimated demand is sufficient for planning but real demand data is better for more detailed studies.

The document describes a senior design project to create a sustainable pump and irrigation system for a community garden. It addresses the problems of relying on fossil fuels and long transportation for water and produce. The project goals are to design a non-electric pump and irrigation network using gravity and rainwater capture. Multiple pump designs are considered including wind, hydraulic ram, and spiral coil pumps. An irrigation system using drip lines and calculations for emitter spacing and flow rates is also presented. The design aims to be economically and environmentally sustainable with no ongoing energy costs.
This document provides details of a senior design project to create a sustainable pump and irrigation system for a community garden. It addresses the problems of the current faulty pump system and lack of irrigation network. The project goals are to design a non-electric pump and irrigation system that effectively pumps available water. The design will include a rainwater capture system, irrigation network using drip lines, and a coil pump design. Equations and costs are analyzed. The timeline outlines completing the design by the end of the semester.
This document summarizes a research project exploring the relationship between water availability and small-scale agricultural systems near Mount Kenya. The research examines how hydrologic variability is offset by irrigation using river water, which supports a range of agricultural operations. It also investigates the potential impacts of climate change on water availability and livelihoods in the area. The research questions guiding the study examine current and past irrigation use, populations dependent on irrigation for livelihoods, and factors affecting the resilience of dryland agriculture. The ongoing work involves stream gauging, isotopic sampling, and the development of a socio-hydrologic model to evaluate outcomes of climate and land use change on total crop yields.
The document is the agenda for a City Council workshop on March 10th, 2016 to discuss the City of College Station's Water Master Plan Update. It includes population projections showing growth through 2024 and buildout in 2052, as well as water demand projections on an annual and max day basis. It discusses water system analyses conducted using a water model to predict demands. It recommends a new lower pressure plane to improve water pressures and quality, including constructing a new elevated tank and pressure reducing valves. The capital improvements plan identifies both capacity driven projects and renewal projects needed for the water system.

Why Apache Kafka Clusters Are Like Galaxies (And Other Cosmic Kafka Quandarie...Paul Brebner
Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
