• A well known touristic resort
located in south of Portugal
• InfraQuinta is the water
utility that manages the
water services
• The main water distribution
network was built in 1972
• Since then, no rehabilitation
plan has been developed
The uncertainty of water demand in
Quinta do Lago

• High peak water consumptions: summer = 5x winter
• Atypical pattern: high peak at night (from 3am to 7am);
low peak during the afternoon (from 12pm to 7pm)
• High consumptions in outdoor uses (e.g. garden
watering) in comparison with domestic indoor water uses

Conclusions
• Telemetry data hourly collected is of the utmost importance for the Planning
and Asset Management Department, that aims to:
– Establish a strategy for rehabilitation
– Improve water network in terms of hydraulic performance and energy efficiency
– Help the daily management (leakage assessment and burst/illegal uses detection)
• Hydraulic model with estimated water demand is enough for planning
purposes
• Real water demands is more adequate when a more detailed analysis is
necessary

Conclusions • Telemetry data hourly collected is of the utmost importance for the Planning and Asset Management Department, that aims to: – Establish a strategy for rehabilitation – Improve water network in terms of hydraulic performance and energy efficiency – Help the daily management (leakage assessment and burst/illegal uses detection) • Hydraulic model with estimated water demand is enough for planning purposes • Real water demands is more adequate when a more detailed analysis is necessary 13
