The DrupalCampLA 2011 presentation on backend performance. The slides go over optimizations that can be done through the LAMP (or now VAN LAMMP stack for even more performance) to get everything up and running.
The presentation of the Drupal frontend optimizations from Drupal Camp LA 2011. The slides go over optimizations you do in the backend to serve files in the frontend faster and optimizations in the front end to css and javascript to make that aspect run faster.
A brief intro summarising 'Hello Drupal' introducing the basic terms used in Drupal and how to install it.
This was the talk given at Drupal Camp Scotland 25 May 2012.

The Omega Drupal 7 Base Theme is a highly configurable HTML5/960 grid base theme that uses built-in media queries to make the site responsive. Each zone (group of regions) can be configured for content first layouts, that resize and rearrange themselves depending on the screen size of the user's device.
The presentation will walk-through the theory behind Omega's mobile-first approach, how to use the many configuration options on the theme settings page, pitfalls to avoid, and what's on the forecast for Omega 4.x!

SenchaCon 2016: LinkRest - Modern RESTful API Framework for Ext JS Apps - Rou...Sencha
LinkRest is an active project commissioned and open sourced by NHL under Apache 2.0 license. It was conceived specifically as the server-side counterpart to Ext JS, so it natively supports Ext JS rest proxy, including CRUD, grouping, sorting, filtering, and more. In this session, we'll review Ext JS protocol support. You'll also see extensions that allow the client to safely query the server for specific data and shape the response. We'll cover advanced features, including security, constraints, idempotent methods, and metadata service. We'll show demos and try to allow time for Q&A.
Like all frameworks, Drupal comes with a performance cost, but there are many ways to minimise that cost.
This session explores different and complementary ways to improve performance, covering topics such as caching techniques, performance tuning, and Drupal configuration.
We'll touch on benchmarking before presenting the results from applying each of the performance techniques against copies of a number of real-world Drupal sites.
Have you ever cried yourself to sleep unable to find the cause of a horrendous bug in your WordPress site? Cry no more, your tears will be reshaped as blinding swords as we explore uncharted territories laced with mystical creatures.
Debugging is an often avoided topic due to the uncertainty of how best to accomplish it and the lack of powerful introspective tools. This talk will explore new territory and showcase tools that help you debug complex and difficult issues in your WordPress site.
SenchaCon 2016: Building a Faceted Catalog of Video Game Assets Using Ext JS ...Sencha
At Ubisoft Technology Group, we've created a platform for video game production to share game assets, in-game footage, and animations across the entire company. Ease of search and good UX were incredibly important for an audience of artists and creative types. This is where the Web and a powerful JavaScript framework came in; we chose Ext JS for its robustness and scalability. In this session, we'll showcase two different applications and dive into the technical aspects of designing the UI for a faceted search based on Elasticsearch.
Yahoo has developed the de facto standard for building fast front-ends for websites. The bad news: you have to follow 34 rules to get there. The good news: I'll take a subset of those rules, explain them, and show how you can implement those rules in an automated fashion to minimize impact on developers and designers for your high-traffic website.
Rapidly prototyping web applications using BackPressNathaniel Taintor
From my talk at WordCamp Seattle 2011:
Most people who work with WordPress every day have at best a passing familiarity with what BackPress is. And for good reason – its a very unfinished project, with very few real-world examples and very scarce documentation. At its heart, though, BackPress is (was) a very ambitious project, and still can be valuable to developers who learned to code hacking on WordPress. The same functionality and structure that makes WordPress so easy and pleasant to work on can be harnessed to just about any end you can imagine. I’ll try to explain when and where BackPress might be a good choice to use on a project, and what to look at if you’re thinking about getting started in it.
A presentation about webfont services and how to stop using the same old 15 web-safe fonts we've been using for two decades. Examples from four webfont providers: FontSquirrel, Google Font API, Typekit, and Extensis WebINK. Includes implementation details.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

2. About me
Computer Systems Analyst at the California Institute
of the Arts (http://calarts.edu)
Nice fonts make me smile.
3. About this presentation
Some module demonstrations
The contrib area does make it much easier
It is more efficient to do custom work at the theme layer
(or even in a site module)
Do that if you feel comfortable.
Feel free to jump in.
If you have something to share, come up!
4. About this presentation
Various other methods
Flash Based Text Replacement, Javascript based will *not* be covered.
Focus on 4 modules
Image Based Text Replacement
Cufon
Using @font-face
Google Fonts
Webfont Loader API
@font-your-face
Some places to get nice fonts
Anything else?
5. Image Based Text Replacement
No issues with a flash blocker (like sIFR)
Don’t have to worry about licensing issues as much.
Quite a few options
Cufon (Most popular though 6.x no longer supported –
it is, however, still fairly stable)
TextImage (Second best option)
FaceLift Image Replacement
ImageAPI Text Renderer
Signwriter
6. Image Based Text Replacement
Cufon
Download Cufon module (http://goo.gl/pxi1z)
Download external cufon js (http://goo.gl/AqZAq)
Generate a font definition (http://goo.gl/x0ar)
Move the js file to sites/all/libraries/cufon-fonts (or
add to your theme).
DEMO
7. Using @font-face
Quickly become the standard.
Text remains unchanged.
Licensing issues…
Currently need many different font formats.
eot: IE4+
otf/ttf: Safari (iOS 4.2+), FF 3.5+, Opera, Chrome
svg: iOS < 4.1, Opera
woff: FF 3.6+, Opera, Chrome, IE9+, Safari 5.1+
Browsers load the font in different ways (some show
plain text until font is downloaded, other hide text)
8. Using @font-face (cont’d)
Google Font Directory (http://goo.gl/M9f7)
Enable and go!
DEMO
Webfont Loader (http://goo.gl/ipc3U)
More setup work
Uses javascript to figure out when fonts are loaded
Slightly slower but more consistent behavior
Natively works with typekit, google fonts, fonts live,
fontdeck and ‘custom’ sources
Create font packages which contain this information along
with the css files to reference.
9. Using @font-face (cont’d)
Font-Your-Face (http://goo.gl/27ORm)
Enable and go (works with a number of providers)
Native providers include typekit, kernest, font squirrel,
google fonts
6.x has ability to upload custom fonts (still to be ported
to 7.x)
Integration between Webfont Loader and Font-Your-
Face in works.
DEMO
10. Places to get nice fonts
Free, commercial use fonts
Kernest (http://kernest.com)
