2. DEFINITION OF DRUG
ABUSE
Drug abuse is a chemical substance, medication or medicine to cure,
treat, prevent disease or to promote well being.
Drug abuse is the pattern and excessive use of any substance in
quantity that violate medical prescription or advise.
Drug is the deliberate and excessive use of any substance without
medical prescription.
4. REASONS FOR PEOLE ABISING DRUG
• To cure ailments: people take some drugs in excess to cure some ailment affecting the
body e.g. paracetamol pain killer etc.
• To cure life problems; some people take drugs excessively just to escape from their
worries and challenges of life not minding that such problem will certainly come back
after the drug as complete its function.
• Peer group influence: many youths are into drug abuse due to peer group influence so
that they can be accepted as a gang member.
• Cure emotional preesure :some people takes drug to overcome shyness and feel high,
when they are trying to preform in a crowd.
• Poor family upbringing: some people can be into drug abuse as a result of lack of
good moral and an undisciplined life.
5. Symptoms of drug abuse
1. High look: The eyes of the abuser may be high and this may scare people from talking to
them
2. Sweating: There may be unusual sweating in the body even in cold weather with bad body
odor
3. Depression: Drug abusers are always depressed and lack happiness
4. Loss of weight; They may not be able to eat proper diet as a result of wastage of money on
drugs which may eventually lead to loss of weight
5. Licking of lips; There may be persistent licking of lips because the drugs they take make
them have a dry lips.
