2. INTRODUCTION
A mood stabilizers is a psychiatric medicines which is
used to treat mood disorders characterized by intense
and sustained mood shifts. Such as bipolar disorder,
Schizoprenia disorder ,Seizures and depression.

3. CLASSIFICATION
Some commonly used mood stabilizers are :-
⧫ Lithium
⧫ Carbamazepine
⧫ Sodium valproate
⧫ Lamotrigine
⧫ Gabapentin

4. SODIUM VALPROATE
• Valproate and it’s valproic acid , sodium valproate
and valproate semisodium forms are the
medications primarily used to treat epilepsy and
bipolar disorder and to prevent migraine
headaches.They are also used in the prevention of
seizures.

 Oral route
 Intravenous route

8. DOSAGE
• the usual dose is 15 mg/kg/day with maximum of
60mg/kg/day orally.
• 20-40 mg/kg IV

11. MECHANISM OF ACTION
• The mechanism of action is not Fully understood.The drug
acts on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA),An inhibitory
amnio acid neurotransmitters.GABA receptor activation
serves to reduce neuronal excitability.

12. PHARMACOKINETICS
⧫ Absorption - Rapidly and completely absorbed
orally.
⧫ Distribution - 80%-90% protein bounding.
⧫ Metabolism - Metabolised in liver.
⧫ Excretion - it is excreted by urine.
⧫ Half life - 9 to 16 hours.
⧫ It is also crosses placenta.

•Thrombocytopenia
•Liver problems

•Lactating mother’s

➢ Nausea
➢ Vomiting
➢ Diarrhea
➢ Sedation
➢ Ataxia
➢ Weight gain
➢ Loss of hair

17. NURSE’S RESPONSIBILITY
• Check whether the patient is allergic to this drug
• Monitor vital signs
• Check for respiratory depression
• Raise side rails
• Observe for side effects like hangover, dizziness,
confusion.

18. CONT….
• Teach non pharmacological ways to induce sleep
• Suggest to urinate before taking sedative hypnotics to
prevent sleep disruption
• Instruct to avoid alcohol and antidepressants,
antipsychotics and narcotic drugs to avoid respiratory
depression.

19. CONT....
• Advise the patient to take the drug immediately after
food to reduce GI irritatin.
• Advise regular follow-up and periodic examination of
blood count,Hepatic function and thyroid function.
