6. Sustainability… a ‘wicked’
problem
• No clear definition of the problem
• No ‘right or wrong’ rather ‘better or worse’
• Stakeholders have different ways of looking
at the problem
• Causes and effects within the system are
complex, unknown and/or highly uncertain
Such a problem has the essential characteristic
that it is not solvable; it can only be managed.
Peterson, 2013
9. Livestock’s Long Shadow
“The Livestock sector is a major
player, responsible for 18% of
GHG emissions measured in
CO2e. This is a higher share
than transport” (FAO 2006)
• Used Life Cycle Assessment
18. Communication and
engagement with the public
Public concern and regulatory
pressure regarding:
• CAFOs
• Animal welfare
• Food safety
• Use of technology
• Environmental impact
Misinformation is a problem, but also we
also have differences in values,
interests, and lack of trust – more than
just an “educate the public” issue

Editor's Notes
So, what is one of the contributors to climate change and global temperatures? And one of the ways we influence these temps? Greenhouse gases… but they are not all created “equal”
Sustainability is a not an easily defined term—it has different meanings to different people, but I will offer you my definition and the one that will guide my through my extension and applied research here in Washington. Sustainability means achieving long-term viability and success regardless of the industry/business in question. For dairy farmers, this often seems to be the overall goal, I want to leave a success, profitable business to the next generation. One where the quality of the land is maintained or improved, the productivity of the cows improves, a farm that I can proudly pass on to the next generation that is respected in the community.
Examples of media that referenced LLS.
So what’s the connection between animal agriculture and global warming? Why should the industry care? One report that generated a lot of media attention was LLS from 2006. In particular, one sentence got a lot of media attention. Unfortunately, it was misapplied.
This is why having scientists specifically focusing on this is so important. OSU can really be a leader serving the public through research, education, and extension efforts with this Sustainable Beef Systems professorship and the program that could be build through collaborations with others at OSU and beyond.
18% is questionable as it is a global average
– US: 3.4%
– Paraguay: 50%
– Ethiopia: 90%
Food security is a complex condition. Its dimensions – availability, access, utilization and
stability – are better understood when presented through a suite of indicators.
