Dr. Indira H. Sahajwalla was a retired senior chief medical officer who proposed changes to the Consumer Protection Act 1986 in India, including raising the application time from 15 to 30 days and allowing cases to be dealt with at the district level. The act applies to all goods and services. Dr. J.J. Merchant was the first consumer to file a petition under the amended act. In his oration, Dr. J.J. Merchant discussed total brain health, which involves the body, mind and spirit. Lifestyle behaviors like exercise, diet, intellectual and social activity can improve memory and decrease dementia. He advocated keeping socially and intellectually engaged to improve total brain health as we age.
