Sorghum downy mildew is a fungal disease that infects sorghum plants, reducing crop yields. It causes small white or multi-colored spots on leaves. The fungus lives in soil between growing seasons and infects sorghum roots when a susceptible plant is nearby. Researchers at the International Sorghum and Millet Collaborative Research Support Program are working to develop sorghum varieties with resistance to downy mildew to help farmers, particularly in Africa where sorghum is a staple crop. They are testing different sorghum genetic backgrounds to identify resistant types that could be used to create hybrids to help control this internationally important disease.
