General Safety Rules
No Horsing around
 Do not behave in a silly and noisy way
 Laboratory is not a place being silly
 Focus on completing your experiments correctly and
safely.
 You Should always conduct yourself with mature and
appropriate manner.
Laboratory Hygiene
 Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the laboratory
 Do not apply cosmetics
 Do not touch your face, mouth, eyes or nose while
working
 Do not suck pens or chew pencils
These activities are the ways by which you
can accidently ingest harmful chemicals
Use proper head net or caps
Follow the safety instructions carefully
 All of should aware about the location and use of
safety equipment's and facilities such as
 Exits
 Eye wash foundation
 First Aid Kit
 Fire extinguisher etc..
Keep your Lab area uncluttered….
 Take to the Lab only what is necessary
 Clean up your Lab area after you are finished the work

Chemical Safety
 Wear Safety apron
 Wear safety googles whenever required
 Make sure the emergency eyewash station available in
the laboratory
Chemical Safety
 After handling the chemicals, always wash your hands with soap
and water.
 Never mix chemicals “for Just fun”
• Keep only the chemicals you
need for experiments
• Keep all lids closed after use
• Be careful while working with
acids
• Always pour above the sink
rather than your work area

 Do not inhale fumes directly
 When instructed to smell a substance, inhale gently

 When diluting acids, always add small amount of
Acids in to water

 Do not pipette out solution by Mouth

 Most important “ Never taste any chemicals”

 Work with volatile chemicals under “Fume Cupboard”
Awareness of Chemical Symbols
Know the hazards of the chemicals being used
Glassware Safety
 Check the condition of the glassware before and after used
 Do not pick up broken glass with your bare hands
 Inform to the concerned about any broken, chipped or cracked
glassware and “it should not be used”
 Place broken glass in the designated glass disposal container.
Glassware Safety
 Never force glass tubing in to rubber stopers
 Never place glassware in the edges of your work place
 Never eat or drink out with Lab glassware
 Don’t pick up any glassware while heating
Electrical Safety
 Keep electrical codes away from the walking area
 Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands
 Unplug codes by pulling the plug and not by CODE
 Turn off the equipment as soon as you finished the work
Heating Safety
 Never heat anything that you are not instructed to heat
 Let hot plate cool down before touching them
 Use tongs or glove to handle hot object

 Point test tubes or bottles that are being heated
away from you and others
Fire Safety
 Make sure that the fire extinguishers are available in the laboratory
 Wear proper Cap and confine loose cloths.
 Never reach across open flame
 Make sure that the hot plates, hot burners are turned off.
Otherwise…………..
First Aid – Burns
Treat heat burns:
 Run cool water over the area for five to 10 minutes.
 If minor (first degree or less), apply burn cream and a sterile bandage
 If more serious, seek medical treatment, but if the burn is large or the
victim appears to be in shock, seek medical treatment immediately..
First Aid – Burns
Treat chemical burns (either acid or alkaline):
 Remove contaminated clothing and rinse the area with large amounts of
cool, running water for 15 minutes and seek medical treatment.
 Call medical attention if the victim appears faint, dizzy, or the area is large
First Aid – Cuts
 Apply pressure to the wound with sterile gauze
 Wash with soap and water
 Apply a sterile bandage.
For a more serious cut:
 Have the person sit down and raise the bleeding part while adding
pressure.
 Continue to add pressure, while transporting them to an urgent care or
emergency room. If the bleeding is severe or the person feels faint or
light headed, call for urgent medical treatment
First Aid – Eye injuries
 If dust, liquid, or a chemical makes contact with the eye area, follow
these steps:
 If a chemical splashes in the eye, flush with running water for at least
15 minutes.
 Make sure the victim turns their head from side to side and allow water
to run across both eyes.
 Seeking medical treatment.
 If dust or solid material is in the eye, cover or close the eye and seek
medical treatment.
