Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra wrote Don Quixote de la Mancha, drawing on his own life experiences as a soldier, slave, tax collector. The novel, published in 1605, follows Alonso Quixano who takes the name Don Quixote and sets out with his squire Sancho Panza to do good deeds. Don Quixote imagines Aldonza Lorenzo as his lady Dulcinea. The novel explores Don Quixote's adventures and battles as he tries to live out his ideals of chivalry, though he is often tricked by others.
