Android is an open source software stack that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications for mobile devices. It was acquired by Google in 2005 and released as open source in 2007. The Android SDK provides tools and APIs for building applications that run on the Dalvik virtual machine. Applications are written in Java and distributed through Android Market or self-published websites. Future development may include additional text and speech capabilities.
