Dominique Francis has held several leadership positions in her time at Georgia Southern University, including President of D.I.M.E.S. Fashion Organization. Through this organization, she has gained experience planning and executing events, managing social media, and working with others. She coordinated the 3rd Annual Miss Phi Beta Sigma Scholarship Pageant and proposed the 2012 Women Empowerment Conference to empower college women. • Throughout my years at Georgia Southern University, I have progress into a women
that possess the confidence, assertiveness, and passion that is needed to thrive.
• I have obtained the classroom skills offered by GSU and within the fashion
merchandising program, but joining a fashion organization has given me the hands on
experiences & opportunity to build as a leader.
• As a leader for D.I.M.E.S. (Designs. Inspired. Magnificently. Exhibited. In. Style.) Fashion
Organization, I have gained experience in delegating tasks, time management, and
working with others to promote the creative expression of fashion at our college. I
have been a part of D.I.M.E.S. for 3 years working my way up starting as a make -up
artist, to the cosmetology head, then creative director and styling and then became
the president of the organization. Through the years I have comprised the themes of
our various fashion shows, photo-shoots, and philanthropic fundraisers. D.I.M.E.S. has
granted me the opportunity to understand the value of the many roles played in
leadership. I have learned so much about myself through my leadership experience
and believe that others have noticed my passion and work ethic when I was asked to
coordinated the 3 rd Annual Miss Phi Beta Sigma Scholarship Pageant. I also pride
myself in taking initiative and working hard to execute my ideas and dreams. In April
2011, I proposed the idea for the 2012 Women Empowerment Conference which I am
proud to say will be executed March 3, 2012 at Georgia Southern University. By holding
such prominent positions, I have learned how to aid in planning and executing for
events and campaigns in a timely and professional matter.

April 2011; I sat with my friend as he spoke with enthusiasm about
the Black Male Empowerment Conference held here at Georgia
Southern University. I asked him, “ Why isn’t there a conference
cater to black women on campus?” He quickly told me that
appealing to these young women is tough so a conference
probably wont happen. I didn’t like his response so the next day I
drafted up a full proposal for a “Black Female Empowerment
Summit” and submitted to the Director of The Multicultural
Student Center on my campus. It was accepted and changed to
“Women Empowerment Conference” which I am proud to say will
be held March 3, 2012 at Georgia Southern University with the
dedication and determination from the planning committee.
The mission of the conference is to empower college-aged women
to effectively navigate challenges in life associated with being a
female, all in an effort to develop as professional working women.
I hope that the 2012 Women Empowerment Conference will
become an annual tradition for the campus of Georgia Southern
University, and hope it will encourage the development of
leadership in college-trained women. By bringing awareness of how
women can improve the quality of their lives and others, it motivate
women to support issues affecting women regionally and globally .
We are trying bring women of different lifestyles and diverse
backgrounds together to foster a celebration of women.

The Blackmon Road Community (BRC) is one of the poorest communities in South Carolina. The
residents of Blackmon Road are living in third world conditions. They live without indoor
plumbing, bathrooms or showers, without trash pick-up, without paved roads, and without street
lights – effectively, without the basic material necessities we have come to expect in one of the
wealthiest countries in the world. For years it has been on the border between the city of Rock
Hill and York County, invisible and ignored...and less than a mile away from the center of a
growing and bountiful city, teeming with resources.
A Place for Hope (APFH) is committed to providing material resources, hands-on educational
training and job development programs, and psychological hope for the residents, who find
themselves living at the intersection of race, class, and gender inequalities. Thus APFH is about
social service and social change.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) strives through education, advocacy, and
partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food.We provide a regional
distribution warehouse and branches that supply food and grocery items to charitable agencies
that assist people in need. We also provide training, consultation, technical assistance, and hunger
education to our partner agencies.
Emmett Scott Recreation Center/C.R.A.V.E.
The Emmett Scott Recreation Center is home to the C.R.A.V.E. after school program. C.R.A.V.E. is
dedicated to helping the development of youth by providing role models and positive messages
for these young people.

17. A Place for Hope
• For years the Blackmon Road community (some still refer to it from its late 40's-50's moniker
"Trash Pile Road") has been on the border between the city of Rock Hill and York County, invisible
and ignored...and less than a mile away from the center of a growing and bountiful city, teeming
with resources. The year is 2011...nearly ten (10) years since our mission had begun, and yet...there
are homes and dwellings that remain in need of urgent, basic human services.
• In terms of access to water and sewer infrastructure, healthcare, and basic human services, the
Blackmon Road Community has been designated by the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control as being the "most severely underserved community in the entire state".
• We are shamed in this, the land of opportunity and hope, as we see our fellow Americans...our
sisters and our brothers and their children and grand-folk living in the searing pain and
uncertainty that the life of generational poverty brings with it. There are infants, school-aged
children and teens who live in the Blackmon Road Community, and the dozens of children of
extended families who, more often than not, spend their days and nights in the care of the adult
family members living in the community.
• These children are part of a cycle of poverty that we have the capacity to interrupt and change ,
by offering support and access to basic social services. They need the kinds of structural support,
educational programming, and psychological increase in the spiritual, political, social, and
economic strength of individuals and communities. It involves the empowered developing
confidence in their own capacities. that will provide them with the self-esteem and community-
building activities to truly believe that their lives can be different, that they can be anything they
want to be in this world through commitment, hard work, dedication, and an equal opportunity to
pursue their dreams.
