Cloud-native Application Development on OCISven Bernhardt
Presentation delivered at DOAG 2022
Abstract:
Building applications in a Cloud-native way is the new normal, since the world is hybrid nowadays. Cloud-native applications are flexible, scalable and portable from On-prem environment to any Cloud platform as well as between different Cloud-vendor platforms without changing the actual implementation. This session will look at the key characteristics of Cloud-native applications and what this means for enterprises. In this session, I'll also give an overview on OCI and the provided Cloud-native apps development platform. In addition, I'll demo developing and running Cloud-native apps in OCI and will introduce the relevant Services.
This short slide deck summarizes the motivation behind investing in memory forensics, the options we considered and tech stack we're using to acquire memory of an EC2 instance, and our approach to memory analysis.
Service Mesh with Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, Envoy, Istio and LinkerdKai Wähner
Microservice architectures are not free lunch! Microservices need to be decoupled, flexible, operationally transparent, data aware and elastic. Most material from last years only discusses point-to-point architectures with inflexible and non-scalable technologies like REST / HTTP. This video takes a look at cutting edge technologies like Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, Envoy, Linkerd and Istio to implement a cloud-native service mesh to solve these challenges and bring microservices to the next level of scale, speed and efficiency.
Key takeaways:
- Apache Kafka decouples services, including event streams and request-response
- Kubernetes provides a cloud-native infrastructure for the Kafka ecosystem
- Service Mesh helps with security and observability at ecosystem / organization scale
- Envoy and Istio sit in the layer above Kafka and are orthogonal to the goals Kafka addresses
