This document provides a summary of events being held by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA) at the University of Chicago in mid-February 2013, including: - A 5th anniversary winter festival being held on February 26th to celebrate the opening of the 5710 South Woodlawn student center featuring student performances, food, and activities. - A lecture by author Michelle Alexander on February 21st presented by the Organization of Black Students. - A community conversation on February 28th titled "No Such Thing as Closure" hosted by the Emerging Minds Project. - Additional events being held on February 19th-20th related to Black Heritage month, LGBTQ student life

Incoming as well as returning multicultural graduate and
professional students from all departments will mingle in a
relaxed atmosphere. Dinner and refreshments will be served. ID

On behalf of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs (OMSA), we congratulate you on your admission
and welcome you to the University of Chicago community. Throughout your tenure, we hope you will
visit us and consider our office as a resource. OMSA supports the University's efforts to increase student
of color representation and helps to promote a University community which welcomes cultural diversity
and values the contributions of all of its members. We offer programs and services to support the

 Chicago Multicultural Connection (CMC) is a diversity mentoring program for undergraduate
students of color that builds a sense of community; encourages cross-cultural interaction among
OMSA’s constituent groups; and prepares undergraduates of color for life after graduation. If you
are interested in becoming a Mentor, apply online today!
 The Amandla Student Resource Center, is home to a number of resources and events that
celebrate cultural diversity at the University of Chicago. Students can enjoy many OMSA
programs at Amandla. Students are welcome to stop by the center to study, explore academic and
cultural resources, connect with their CMC mentor, or just spend time with their friends.
 OMSA publishes a Resource Guide and the Alternative Guide to Chicago (which gives you
details about restaurants, shopping areas, and places of interest in the neighborhoods of Chicago).

For Colored Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Still Not
Enough: Coming of Age, Coming Out, and Coming Home (featuring Keith Boykin)
Keith Boykin addresses longstanding issues of sexual abuse, suicide, HIV/AIDS,
racism, and homophobia in the African American and Latino communities, and
more specifically among young gay men of color. During his lecture, Keith shares
stories of real people coming of age, coming out, dealing with religion and
spirituality, seeking love and relationships, finding their own identity in or out of
the LGBT community, and creating their own sense of political empowerment.
Following the lecture, Mr. Boykin will be available for a book signing. A limited
number of books will be available for purchase at the event.
Location: Hyde Park Union Church, corner of Woodlawn & 56th Street.

Tuesday February 26, 7:00 pm
Join 5710 South Woodlawn for a Winter Festival to celebration the 5 year anniversary of
the grand opening of 5710. The festival features student organization performances,
chocolate fountain, food, henna artist and so much more!
Help us kick off the festivities as we celebrate the five year anniversary with five events in
