What Is Domestic Violence?
• Domestic Violence can take different forms, but its goal is always to
gain power and control over its victims often with physical violence
or emotional control .
• Examples of physical violence include
• hitting
• pushing
• slapping
• kicking
• sexually assault
• Anyone can become a victim of domestic violence. It
can happen in all families:
• Rich or Poor
• Young or Old
• Black or White
• Gay or Straight
• Emotional Abuse is also a form of domestic
violence. Abusers may:
• Shout
• Threaten
• Call Names
• Use Other Forms Of Verbal Abuse To Frighten
Victims
Phases Of The Cycle Of Violence
• Domestic Violence usually get worse over
time, unless an effort is made to stop it. It
can lead to serious harm or death.
• It is not a normal way to settle
disagreements.
• Domestic Violence is against the law.
• Domestic Violence CAN be STOPPED. There
are ways to get help. One way is to reach out
to agencies like DART.
What Is DART?
(Domestic Abuse Resistance Team)
• DART is a Non-profit organization formed to help victims of
domestic violence.
• Created to “Help Keep Families Safe”
• Offers trained staff in seven parishes across North Central Louisiana
• Provides help to anyone suffering from physical, mental, emotional,
sexual or financial abuse
Services DART Provides
• Shelter
• Undisclosed Safe Housing
• Assistance for families in escaping from
dangerous situations
• Support in transitioning
• Counseling
• Trained counselors for crisis intervention,
group, and individual
• Weekly support groups
• Advocacy
• Assist with establishing goals and Safety
Planning
• Children’s Services
• A safe environment for children who have
experienced or witnessed abuse
• Crisis intervention, coping skills, safety and self-
esteem guidance
• Educational programs, individual and group
activities, parenting support
• Community Education
• Public Speaking and awareness events
• Seminars for law enforcement, clergy and other
concerned groups
• Education in schools and universities
• Legal Advocacy
• Assistance in obtaining legal representation,
filing protective orders, and pressing charges
• Support in understanding and protecting their
legal rights
Did You Know?
• 75% of battered women state that their children are also battered
• A woman is battered every 13 seconds in the US
• The highest rate of intimate partner violence occurs in people ages 16-24
• 63% of boys, ages 11-29 currently serving time for homicide in the US are
there for killing their mother’s abuser
• 30% of female homicides are committed by their husbands or boyfriends
DART’s goal is to decrease these numbers in all of the categories above
through education and community awareness.
How Can You Help?
• Volunteer
• Fundraisers, client services, children’s programs, office work
• Training is available for all volunteers.
• Make Donations and/or Support Fundraisers
• DART exists through limited funding from grants and donations.
• Without community support our programs could not continue.
• Educate
• Speak out against Domestic Violence
• Make political and community leaders aware of your concerns
• Schedule us to speak at your school, church, business, or community group
