For this interview, I interviewed my friend
Eddie Doherty, owner of Doherty
Landscaping. I met Eddie when I was
younger, and has always been a family friend
and good friend of mine.
My name is Shaun Delaney. I attend Nichols

3. What is Doherty Landscaping?
• Doherty Landscaping is a LLC
business, because it has certain parts of a
corporation and a sole proprietorship.
• Is a landscaping construction and design
service.
• Has been in business for 3 years.

4. Background Information
• Doherty Landscaping started with only 10
clients, mostly being family.
• Started out with a simple pick-up truck and a
walk behind mower.
• Started the business because it was something
he liked to do, was good at, and his family
encouraged him.
• Has been landscaping since age 11.
• Started off with just cutting grass Doherty
Landscaping now offers irrigation, landscape
lighting, masonry, design, installs, maintenance,
and snow removal.

5. How to Be Successful
• Successes: Becoming a known person in the
cities and towns as a hard
working, knowledgeable landscape contractor.
• How to do so: “Knowledge, being confident, and
estimating. Knowledge is a key part to letting
customers know that you know what you are
doing. If you can sell the service, you have the
job. Estimating, I always say estimate to win the
job, but still make money.”

6. Challenges
• The stress, between getting new clients, and
getting paid. Although many do not believe
this most landscaping profits go toward
utility bills.
• Overcoming the Challenges: Just keep
working through it, and hope you get paid.
Hard work always pays in the end.

7. Flaws?
• There are too many competitors in the
business of landscaping. Although there are
many less than half actually know what they
are doing.
• To deal with competitors, Doherty
Landscaping offers a cheaper but better
quality than most of his competitors

• The future holds better things for Doherty
Landscaping.

equipment, acquiring new clients and building

Q: How often do you work
A: From the beginning of the season which is as soon as the
ground thaws till the end of mulch season which is around mid
June, we work 6 day a week. from then till fall cleanups with is the
first week of November, we work 5 days a week, and then when
cleanups begin, the guys will work 7 days a week.
Q:Average number of clients weekly?
A:40 weekly, 60 on our bi weekly. We try to accommodate at
least 30 one time jobs per week.
Q:When you first started, how quickly did you grow?
A: It took a year for the calls to really come in, now I receive
calls daily.

10. Summary
• Business Tip: If you do start a business, make sure
you have a good financial standing, you have a
strong idea and a good work ethic. If you don't
have those. you'll end up just wasting time
money and effort.

have learned that starting a business takes time
and patience, but if you work on it and try your
absolute hardest you will find a way to suceed.
