Enda is the Digital Communications Manager for Sarcoma UK. He decided to test out some of the online fundraising advice that he had been sharing with supporters. Guess what? It worked.
Pester power from Kat so finally decided to do another run

Did a few things right from the very start. Made the story personal and also went beyond the ‘generic’ text of the charity.
Interesting that I was almost apologetic at the beginning (modest target, just text £2, non-UK off the hook) – this all changed though – maybe you can identify with this psychology?

Finding my feet (ha ha) and getting more confident in the ask
I had a target from the start, just £100, but I changed this a few times so I could say ‘Can you get me over the £200 mark?’ ‘Can you donate the £5.90 to push me over £350?’ etc?
Mention Gift Aid – several of my taxpaying friends didn’t know about it, esp with the Text donations - thought it was spam
Custom URL with bit.ly. It’s free and handy for Instagram and the video
Making things easy for people to support me – that’s how I reframed this in my head – I’m not begging and forcing people to do something; I’m giving people an opportunity to do something nice. Marketing concept where you ‘give something, give something, give something, then ask’
Give an update, a video, a photo, a anecdote, something funny, something thoughtful, how you’re feeling/worried/exhausted/thankful/elated – the ask doesn’t need to be the focus every time (although the link can be there). Bringing people along with you on the trip
No doubt that updates inspired donations – almost 100% on donations came on the days I posted
The video had the most pronounced uptick
Most important – you are not being a bother. You are doing something utterly amazing and your contacts are in awe of you. There is so much noise out there that you could get lost and not be seen by the people who *want* to support you. Make some noise and make it easier for them to show you their support.
Again – key message – you are doing a wonderful thing becuas you’re a wonderful human being
