The smallpox vaccine is estimated to protect against monkeypox in 85% of cases, as the monkeypox virus is closely related to the variola virus that causes smallpox. While the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine does not protect against monkeypox, the World Health Organization and CDC advise using the smallpox vaccine until a dedicated monkeypox vaccine is available. Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headache, muscle aches, and swelling of the lymph nodes, followed by a rash that spreads from the face to other areas of the body over 1-3 weeks. There have been 257 confirmed global cases of monkeypox reported to the WHO as of late May 20
