This document discusses common faulty logic and persuasive techniques used to influence beliefs, including:
- Glittering generalities that use emotive words to attract attention rather than provide real information.
- Hasty generalizations that make broad conclusions without sufficient evidence or sample size.
- False dilemmas that oversimplify issues and ignore other possibilities.
- Bandwagon arguments that encourage beliefs or actions just because they are popular.
- Slippery slope arguments that claim one small action will inevitably lead to larger, extreme consequences.
The document aims to help readers recognize and think critically about misleading persuasive strategies.
English is an important language to learn for several reasons:
1) It provides access to vast amounts of knowledge and information from around the world, as most media and resources are available in English.
2) Having strong English skills can help advance one's career opportunities in many fields like business, technology, and science.
3) English is relatively easy to learn compared to other languages, with a simple alphabet and consistent rules for plurals, verb conjugation, and word forms.
This document provides information about the use of "there is/are" in English. It begins with an explanation of when "there is" and "there are" are used to express existence or ask about existence. It then provides rules for forming sentences in the present, past, future and with speculation using "there is/are" in the singular and plural. It discusses exceptions and variants like "there's no" and "there aren't any". It also identifies common mistakes non-native English speakers make and provides examples. Finally, it includes a short practice activity where the reader identifies and corrects errors in sample sentences.
The document provides tips for effective meetings, including being well organized and starting on time, preparing an agenda, not being distracted by cell phones, and using PowerPoint presentations effectively by making them engaging and avoiding excessive text. It also discusses challenges with international conference calls and differences in business customs across cultures that are important to be aware of.
1. The author was asked to give a technical presentation in Berlin to an audience of Russian and Ukrainian physicians who varied in their English proficiency.
2. To prepare, the author slowed down her speech significantly and practiced saying "Good day" in Russian to engage the audience.
3. The presentation went well and the audience provided positive feedback, showing that with careful preparation including slowing speech, using simple language, engaging the audience in their native language, and allowing for questions, one can effectively present to a non-native English speaking group.
The slideshow contains tips and techniques on how to develop great ideas, how to choose topic, how to maintain good posture and avoid bad ones. It also consists of several activities like Tree Map for speech, cards for creative elevator pitch and some suggestions on how to improve your speech. This slideshow is compiled and created by Sirhajwan Idek.
The document discusses how DJs and musicians in Liberia are helping to raise awareness about Ebola through their music. Originally, government-commissioned songs about Ebola painted too dark of a picture and scared people, possibly increasing the spread of the disease. Now, local artists like Elliott The Milkman Adekoya are taking a more positive approach by creating danceable songs that educate people about prevention while reinforcing courage. One popular song called "Ebola is Real" teaches protection methods in an uplifting way. The new musical styles are seen as helping empower people and reduce fear.

International Sign as a Conference LanguageMobileDeaf
This document summarizes research on International Sign (IS) as a lingua franca at various deaf conferences. It finds that IS events without interpreters eliminate hearing privilege but present barriers and opportunities for deaf participants to collaborate and develop IS. Conference policies on the use of IS versus national sign languages impact which groups are most privileged. Presenting in IS without interpreters cultivates deaf linguistic strategies, but interpretation changes the experience.
The document discusses the importance and benefits of learning English. It notes that English is the most widely spoken language globally and provides access to information, careers, and knowledge in many fields. Learning English is also described as relatively easy, with a simple alphabet and grammar compared to other languages. English learning allows people to connect with others around the world and access media like television and the internet in English. Overall, the document advocates for learning English to improve one's life opportunities and ability to communicate internationally.
Conference presentations are the moment to share your results, and to connect with researchers about future directions. However, presentations are often created as an afterthought and as a result they are often not as exciting as they could be.
In this slidedeck Felienne Hermans shares hands-on techniques to engage an audience.
The talk covers the entire spectrum of presenting: we start with advice on how to structure a talk and how to incorporate a core message into it. Once we have addressed the right structure for a talk, we will work on adding stories and arcs of tension to your presentation. Finally, to really perform as a presenter, we will talk about how slide design and body language can support your presentation.
The document provides advice to speakers on how to keep their audience awake during presentations. It identifies the five most common mistakes speakers make: relying too heavily on technical aids like PowerPoint slides; lacking in-depth, engaging content; having no interaction with the audience; overusing filler words; and experiencing technical difficulties. The document urges speakers to avoid these pitfalls by preparing well and focusing on telling stories and sharing expertise, rather than just facts and slides. This will help keep audiences interested and awake.
The document provides tips for giving an effective presentation. It discusses preparing for the presentation by understanding the audience and venue. The main parts of a presentation should stay on schedule and keep the audience engaged with techniques like telling an anecdote or asking questions. Visual aids can enhance the presentation if used properly. The closing involves summarizing key points and taking questions. Body language like making eye contact is also important to connect with the audience.
This document provides guidance on how to give effective oral presentations that differ from written forms of communication. It discusses two key factors: there is no written record for the audience to refer back to, so presentations need to be simple and guide the audience; and the presenter must be the center of attention through their delivery. Techniques are presented for effective use of voice, eye contact, positioning, body language, dress, visual aids and handling questions. The importance of preparation, content organization, audience analysis, rehearsal and confidence are also covered to help presenters deliver clear, engaging presentations.
CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on BlockchainClaudio Di Ciccio
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

How can I help? Jean Wingtips: I'm new to SL, but I want to "ramp up" fast on delivering training here. 1
7. You: What sort of training? Jean Wingtips: I'm considering renting/buying a place on this island. Are you an owner? You: No. But I know one Gavin Dudeney, the owner of this island, and two others. Jean Wingtips: I have developed courseware and consulting offerings to help IT experts learn to be billable consulants Jean Wingtips: I have spoken to Gavin, but am wondering if there are any current tenants Jean Wingtips: It's always good to hear from "the customers" don't you think? Jean Wingtips: Is this the sample office? 2
8. You: Absolutely. Afraid I'm not a tenant, though - but he has some impressive tenants. Jean Wingtips: Have you spoken to any? Jean Wingtips: What is your purpose here? Are you a trainer? You: Did you know a Dutch MP visited this island to give a speech in election campaign? Jean Wingtips: No I didn't. That's interesting.... Jean Wingtips: I don't know what MP stands for. Please advise. ……… .. Jean Wingtips: I am formal, by nature, as you can see - I'm comfortable in a suit and chose the name "wingtips" (formal shoes.) 3
9. ( JW mentioned that she had been to Germany.) Jean Wingtips: I loved the way the German people speak their minds - here in US that is often politically incorrect, but I liked it very much You: I tried to make my avatar look like me. Other people indulge their fantasies. Jean Wingtips: Nice talking with you. Thanks for the info Jean Wingtips: I like the way you look. Like a smart, casual man [We then switched to speech, of which there is no automatic log.] 4

13. The essence of the SL experience Presence - you feel there Trees swaying in the breeze Birds flying overhead The noise of surf breaking on the beach You can walk, fly, sit down, stand up,talk, hear, write, read, watch videos and films, listen to music, record sounds and images (with help of other programs), dance (with a special script), dress up, change your appearance For me the quintessence of the appeal is: Visual – colour, depth and space. You can walk around. You can talk to people. Nonetheless, feeling of privacy – you are probably the only person at your monitor.
15. Video clips In the presentation there were 2 links to short SL sequences made with a screen capturing program. Since you must be connected to the internet if you are reading this, though, if you haven‘t yet visited SL, you can do so by going to: Second Life
