Crime scene investigators have a limited time to document crime scenes before evidence is altered. They use sketches, photography, and note taking to record the scene. Sketches show the layout and include measurements of objects relative to fixed points for accuracy. Photography is most important, with photos taken of the entire scene from multiple angles without moving any objects, as well as close-ups of individual pieces of evidence. Proper documentation preserves the integrity of the crime scene and evidence.
