Groovy - Grails as a modern scripting language for Web applications
Dynamic scripting languages are a powerful addition to a software designer’s toolbox. Rails/Ruby and Python have not gained much acceptance in the enterprise. Grails and Groovy are an attempt to bridge the gap between the modern scripting world and the Enterprise Java world.
This talk is an introduction towards building web applications in Grails. First we will go about creating a REST based webservice. We will also show how to replace the default database backend of Grails with MySQL.
We will then build a web application that consumes this webservice. The emphasis will be on the design patterns and idioms in Grails that address the web application development lifecycle.

DBI for Parrot and Perl 6 Lightning Talk 2007
This lightning talk proposes adopting the Java JDBC API specification as a common database driver API for Parrot and open source languages. Currently, database interfaces for most languages are limited, different from each other, and involve duplicative development efforts. A common API based on the mature and well-documented JDBC standard could allow drivers to be shared across languages and improve functionality. The speaker is already working on a Perl module that implements the JDBC API and a Summer of Code project to explore a Perl 6 implementation of the DBI API using this module.

Most projects in CF now involve creating some type of consumable CFC Endpoint or API Service... do you Unit test your API, do you use Integration Tests on your API? How many ways do you test your API? Not all tests are created equal.
We build our CFCs and CF API to be consumed with CF Apps, Mobile Apps, Javascript apps and devices we haven’t even thought about yet. To be smart developers we need to be able to test our CFC endpoints, and the code that uses those endpoints.

reading them. But with that simplicity comes problems that become
apparent as your adoption of Docker gathers pace.
* Dockerfiles can inherit from other docker images, but images are not
Dockerfiles
* Dockerfile provides no built-in mechanism for creating abstractions,
so as usage grows identical or similar instructions can be duplicated
across many files
* The Docker APi exposes a build endpoint, but the API is very course,
taking Dockerfile as the transport rather than exposing the individual
instructions
* Dockerfiles are just that, files. So they can come from anywhere
The one layer per line in a Dockerfile limitation can lead to an
explosion of layers, which fail to take advantage of the promised
space and performance benefits.
Docker
Docker is an open platform for developing, shipping, and running applications. It enables separating applications from infrastructure so software can be delivered quickly. Docker uses features of the Linux kernel like namespaces and cgroups to deliver functionality. Containers are more lightweight than virtual machines, using less disk space and starting faster, while still providing isolation. Docker uses images and repositories to package and distribute applications. The Dockerfile defines how to build images from a base image and run commands.

The Dockerfile Explosion and the Need for Higher Level Tools by Gareth Rushgrove
Dockerfiles are great. They provide a zero-barrier-to-entry format for
describing a single Docker image which is immediately clear to anyone
reading them. But with that simplicity comes problems that become
apparent as your adoption of Docker gathers pace.
* Dockerfiles can inherit from other docker images, but images are not
Dockerfiles
* Dockerfile provides no built-in mechanism for creating abstractions,
so as usage grows identical or similar instructions can be duplicated
across many files
* The Docker APi exposes a build endpoint, but the API is very course,
taking Dockerfile as the transport rather than exposing the individual
instructions
* Dockerfiles are just that, files. So they can come from anywhere
The one layer per line in a Dockerfile limitation can lead to an
explosion of layers, which fail to take advantage of the promised
space and performance benefits.
Docker
Docker is an open platform for developing, shipping, and running applications. It enables separating applications from infrastructure so software can be delivered quickly. Docker uses features of the Linux kernel like namespaces and cgroups to deliver functionality. Containers are more lightweight than virtual machines, using less disk space and starting faster, while still providing isolation. Docker uses images and repositories to package and distribute applications. The Dockerfile defines how to build images from a base image and run commands.
Continuous delivery with docker
Slides for my talk at the Blue4IT meeting in Utrecht. It shows you how to run everything in a Docker container. You can run the DTAP environment, the build environment and the development environment (including IDE) in Docker.

Environment isolation with Docker (Alex Medvedev, Alpari)
Docker can isolate application environments in software containers that are like virtual machines but more lightweight and faster. A Dockerfile defines the steps to build a container image. For example, a Dockerfile can create a container image for a Symfony PHP application that contains PHP-FPM and dependencies. The application code can be mounted into the container from the host machine. Nginx on the host can then serve the application using the container's PHP-FPM.
Introduction to Docker - Learning containerization XP conference 2016
Docker containers package applications and their dependencies to run consistently regardless of environment. Containers are more lightweight than virtual machines and use fewer resources. Docker images define the components of containers. The Dockerfile defines how to build images. Docker Compose defines multi-container applications through a YAML file specifying images, networking, volumes etc.

This two-day training covers Docker concepts including installation, working with containers and images, building images with Dockerfiles, and integrating Docker with OpenStack. Day one focuses on the Docker introduction, installation, containers, images, Dockerfiles, and using Nova to run Docker containers as compute instances. It also covers using Glance as a Docker image registry. Day two covers Docker clustering with Kubernetes, networking, Docker Hub, case studies, and the Docker source code. It concludes with developing platforms and running Hadoop on Docker containers.

difficult to keep track of all the different components an application needs in order to
function (a database, a message queueing system, a web server, a document
store, a search engine, you name it.). How many times we heard 'it worked on my
machine'?. In this talk we are going to explore Docker, what it is, how it works
and how much it can benefit in keeping the development environment consistent.
We are going to talk about Dockerfiles, best practices, tools like fig and vagrant,
and finally show an example of how it applies to a ruby on rails

Continuous delivery is a powerful concept, but hard to achieve. One of the challenges is automating the setup of environments and the deployment of the Java EE applications. We have looked at and used quite some tools like for instance Chef, Puppet, Vagrant and Nolio. All tools had one thing in common: we had never used them. Why should we invest time in mastering those tools? There is a perfect alternative in Jenkins, a tool most developers are familiar with. Besides the basic Jenkins buildserver capabilities it offers quite some useful plugins like the Build Pipeline plugin. To setup environments the popular Docker project is used. Docker allows you to create containers from any application. Only some knowledge is required for the setup of the containers. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
